Novak Djokovic was the name on everybody’s lips recently as he took down former Wimbledon champion Andy Murray in the US Open quarter final.
This year’s Wimbledon champion managed to sail through to the semi finals with a final score of 7-6 (7-1), 6-7(1-7), 6-2, 6-4, sending Murray home after a poor summer on the courts.
27-year-old Murray was a shadow of his former self after exiting Wimbledon early this year, just 12 months after winning the title and two years after achieving an Olympic gold medal. The Scot said in a press conference after the match: “I was a little bit disappointed, to be honest, because I did train very hard.
“I thought physically he was better than me in the end. You do the work for these matches, so I would have liked to have felt a little bit better towards the end.”
Djokovic, also 27, took the humble approach after the match, saying: “We both gave our best. At times it was not that nice, a lot of unforced errors, but it was a very physical battle. I didn’t expect anything less. The last five times we played we went over three or four hours.”
The Serb now has to face Kei Nishikori in the semi-finals, but should feel confident that the match will be a success. With seven Grand Slam men’s single titles under his belt, “Djokovic is now the world number one and is hotly tipped to be this year’s US Open winner.
