Okpala closed out a stellar Aztecs career with a double-double of 22 points and 12 rebounds. As a result, this helped lead Esperanza to the program’s first state title in its first appearance. In addition, Esperanza wasn’t fazed in the least by the big court of Sacramento’s Golden 1 Center. He shot 52.3 percent and built a 17-point first-half lead over Moreau Catholic-Hayward. However, the Mariners battled all the way back to take a second-half lead. Then Okpala and teammate Brendan Harrick helped close out the win for the Aztecs.
Okpala is a 6-foot-8 small forward signed to Stanford. He was a Top 40 national recruit for his class, according to ESPN.com.
“He’s a good player,” Moreau Catholic All-State guard Damari Milstead said of Okpala after the game. “He’s good on the defensive end; he rattled me. On the offensive end, he got teammates the shots and he chose his shots really well. He’s a good player.”
