AROUND THE HORN

This week sees a pretty significant shuffle in the NorCal Baseball Rankings. First, we swapped our top two teams yet again. A one-run loss to a ranked team won’t always bump the No. 1 team from the top spot, it often depends on how the team directly below them did. De La Salle was edge 7-6 by then-No. 12 St. Mary’s-Stockton, while Valley Christian posted a 4-0 week with wins over two Top 10 teams (No. 3 Mitty-San Jose and No. 6 Palo Alto). The swap was clear.

And for the latest episode in How The WCAL Turns, Serra-San Mateo turned in a 4-0 week to trade places with Mitty (3-1 with the lone loss to Valley Christian) at the No. 3 and 4 spots. St. Francis-Mountain View also climbed four spots to No. 11 after a strong 2-1 week (the lone loss to a Capuchino-San Bruno team that’s off to a 7-2 start).

Of the four new teams this week, one is a returning member. San Ramon Valley-Danville opened the season in our rankings and was bounced after an 0-3 start. The Wolves have since won five in a row, including a pair of wins over previous-No. 9 Foothill-Pleasanton and a victory over then-No. 17 College Park-Pleasant Hill. The other newbies are all unbeaten, with No. 19 Sequoia-Redwood City (7-0) perhaps with the strongest odds to stick around. The Ravens already have a win over the Capuchino team that topped St. Francis.

New rankings debut each Wednesday.
