FAST BREAKDOWN

It would be hard to script a better start for Campolindo. The defending CIF Division I NorCal champions raced out to 6-0 start with wins over three ranked team. And the Cougars won five of those with top player, junior wing Aidan Mahaney, out nursing an ankle injury. Mahaney returned Saturday in the team’s 46-38 win over former-No. 3 Riordan-S.F. Campolindo will face its fourth Top 20 team on Wednesday as it faces league rival, No. 13 Miramonte-Orinda (4-0).

The Matadors entered the rankings this week fueled mostly by their 69-63 defeat of No. 7 Salesian-Richmond. Salesian (3-2) has wins over both No. 8 De La Salle-Concord and preseason No. 1 Bishop O’Dowd-Oakland. That was one of two opening week losses by the Dragons, who dropped to No. 3 after also losing to No. 2. Mitty but getting a win over De La Salle.

The third new team to enter the rankings this week is Half Moon Bay. The Cougars debut at No. 16 after a convincing upset of previous-No. 9 St. Francis-Mountain View on Monday night. Half Moon Bay’s 9-1 start includes winning three of four against West Catholic Athletic League opponents.

New rankings debut each Tuesday.
