AROUND THE HORN

As we near the final week of the season for many programs, St. Francis-Mountain View has a virtual death grip on the No. 1 spot. With the Central Coast Section holding playoffs, though, the Lancers won’t be able to coast to the finish line.

On the brightside for St. Francis, none of the immediate six teams below them are CCS teams. The Lancers biggest postseason threats are likely No. 8 Mitty (who they’ve already defeated four times) and No. 9 Notre Dame-Salinas. Aragon-San Mateo is the next CCS team at No. 12, and St. Francis accounts for the Dons’ only loss this season — a 12-0 final.

Heritage-Brentwood moved up one spot to No. 2 after previous-No. 2 Rocklin slipped to an unranked Granite Bay in its final week. Heritage is facing a league playoff situation that will wrap Friday. The Patriots are expected to face Freedom-Oakley, a team they’ve beaten four times though the last time by just a 3-2 margin.

Foothill-Pleasanton sits at No. 3 after surviving a grueling East Bay Athletic League schedule with just two defeats. Sac-Joaquin Section foes Rocklin and Sheldon round out the Top 5 with the former getting the slight nod at No. 4 due to a head-to-head win.

The two new teams this week aren’t entirely new. Both No. 18 Granada-Livermore and No. 20 St. Francis-Sacramento are returning thanks to overall resumes. Also, a quick shoutout to Sutter reaching No. 13 — which is the highest we’ve ever ranked a Northern Section softball team in quite some time.
