5 TEAMS KNOCKING:

21. Pleasant Grove-Elk Grove (18-8), 22. Jesuit-Carmichael (13-10), 23. Sacred Heart Cathedral-S.F. (18-7), 24. College Park-Pleasant Hill (16-6) and 25. Cardinal Newman-Santa Rosa (15-2).

AROUND THE HORN

A 4-0 week helps Archbishop Mitty maintain its hold on the No. 1 spot, though the Monarchs will likely need to win a Central Coast Section title if they want to finish the season at the top.

De La Salle move up to No. 2 after closing out its season with a sweep of previous-No. 7 California-San Ramon. It will be hard for the Spartans to finish No. 1 since there are several CCS teams in the Top 8 and one is likely to beat another in a section championship game. However, it’s unlikely DLS would finish worse than No. 2.

With former No. 5 St. Francis-Mountain View going 0-4 last week, it left the door to the Top 5 open for No. 6 Elk Grove to break up the Bay Area party. The Thundering Herd moved up one spot to No. 5 after a 3-0 week.

The NorCal Baseball Rankings welcome two new teams this week. Pittsburg, which shared the Bay Valley Athletic League title with previous No. 14 Heritage-Brentwood, debuts at No. 18 — right below the Patriots teams it’s split four games with so far this season. Thankfully, the Pirates and Heritage will have a chance to settle it on the field as part of the BVAL playoffs. Barring an upset, the top two seeds should square off in Friday’s final.

Placer, a team which began the season ranked but dropped out after a 5-4 start, returns to the Top 20 at No. 19. The Hillmen have won six straight and close out their season with an enticing matchup versus Jesuit-Carmichael on June 1.
