AT THE NET

Nobody dropped from the NorCal Volleyball Rankings after an eight-day stretch between releases. There was still quite a bit of movement thanks to San Ramon Valley-Danville finally making its leap into the Top 5.

We’ve been bullish on the Wolves since the season began, but their overall resume hasn’t been as strong as some others when it comes to wins over ranked teams. However, after a Sept. 22 win over then-No. 3 Monte Vista-Danville — and winning 11 of its last 12 while also twice avenging a loss to California-San Ramon — the Wolves jumped into the Top 5 after Monte Vista stumbled to No. 14 Foothill-Pleasanton last week. They will slot right behind No. 4 Amador Valley-Pleasanton, a team they’ll face in East Bay Athletic League play on Tuesday if the two don’t meet Saturday at the Stockton Classic.

The Stockton Classic has quickly grown to be the premier NorCal volleyball tournament. This year it will feature 72 teams in six flights of 12 across six different locations. The top flight will be hosted by Bear Creek High with nine of the 12 teams ranked inside of our Top 12.

The Bear Creek site will feature No. 1 St. Francis-Mountain View, No. 2 Archbishop Mitty-San Jose, No. 4 Amador Valley, No. 5 San Ramon Valley, No. 6 Monte Vista, No. 7 Branson-Ross, No. 8 St. Mary’s-Stockton, No. 11 Redwood-Larkspur and No. 12 Marin Catholic-Kentfield. Rounding out the rest of the group is Clovis North-Fresno (18-5), Rocklin (16-7) and St. Francis-Sacramento (15-6).

So, yeah, Amador Valley and San Ramon Valley will certainly have an opportunity to prove their Top 5 worth.

The next tier of 12 teams at the Stockton Classic will also hold plenty of intrigue. It includes one ranked team in No. 20 St. Ignatius-S.F., but several bubble teams are in the field being hosted by Escalon. The Cougars will be putting a 22-0 record on the line against the toughest opponents they’ll have seen this year. That includes Christian Brothers-Sacramento (16-6), Folsom (20-6), Pitman-Turlock (21-2), Rio Americano-Sacramento (27-4) and Vacaville (14-4).
