AROUND THE HORN

Only one team dropped out after last week, yet there was still quite a bit of movement in the NorCal Softball Rankings.

Per usual, we’ll start at the top where Mitty’s stat at No. 2 was short-lived. The Monarchs picked up two easy wins last week, but got blind-sided Monday in a 2-0 loss to unranked Willow Glen-San Jose. The loss moved them down just two spots as Granada-Livermore returned to No. 2 and Central Catholic-Modesto assumed No. 3.

Meanwhile, when you beat the No. 2 team behind a combined one-hit shutout — shoutout to freshmen pitchers Lea Crawford and Alanna Clincy — then you can skip the “5 Teams Knocking” Category and go right into the rankings. And that’s exactly what Willow Glen did as they take over No. 20 as our only new team this week.

Elsewhere, there were several ranked teams that took baby steps upwards. Most notably, a pair of unbeaten East Bay Athletic League teams, San Ramon Valley and Foothill-Pleasanton moved up to No. 5 and 6, respectively. SRV is scheduled to play arch rival Monte Vista and a very good Livermore team this week. Foothill’s slate is slightly less daunting this week.

Three teams slid down this week due to losses to some unranked teams. Oakdale fell to No. 11 after a 2-1 loss to Lincoln-Stockton, and Benicia dropped to No. 12 after Vintage-Napa beat them 12-0. Granite Bay’s dropped five spots to No. 19 after falling to former No. 19 Whitney-Rocklin 8-1. Whitney climbed three spots to No. 16.
