AROUND THE HORN

It was a rough opening to the postseason for several teams which were part of the NorCal Baseball Rankings from May 10, especially some of those in the North Coast Section.

Aside from No. 2 De La Salle-Concord (which had its own loss to No. 10 Granada in the East Bay Athletic League semifinals) and No. 20 San Ramon Valley-Danville, the NCS playoffs were particularly cruel to the East Bay Athletic League. Amador Valley-Pleasanton (No. 8 on May 10), Granada, Dublin (No. 19) and Foothill-Pleasanton (the top team “knocking”) were all 1-and-done in the NCS Division I tournament.

Meanwhile, Archbishop Mitty-San Jose — No. 6 in our last rankings — was also ousted in the opening round of the Central Coast Section Div. I bracket. The Monarchs, along with Amador Valley and Granada, all managed to avoid major freefalls due to their overall body of work.

Let’s talk about team’s that moved up, though. San Ramon Valley, which took a big hit in the May 10th rankings after falling to unranked Dougherty Valley-San Ramon, posted a 4-0 week to reach the NCS Division I semifinals. The Wolves are now right back at the bottom of the Top 10. St. Ignatius-S.F. jumped five spots to slot right above SRV at No. 9. The Wildcats shut out previous No. 13 Los Gatos in the opening round of the CCS Div. I playoffs and are rewarded with a semifinal against No. 1 Valley Christian-San Jose.

Fellow WCAL program Bellarmine-San Jose jumped six spots up to No. 12. The Bells went 4-1 over the last 12 days and find themselves in the CCS Div. II semifinals.

All three new teams come from the CCS this week. Hollister returns after dropping out on May 10, jumping in at No. 14 after knocking off previous No. 12 St. Francis-Mountain View in a Div. I opener. Serra drops in at No. 17 and the Live Oak team that upset Mitty debuts at No. 20.

Aptos and Rio Americano-Sacramento are two of our “Knocking” teams to keep an eye on this week. Looking for a must-see semifinal to go watch? We suggest No. 6 Clayton Valley at No. 10 San Ramon Valley on Tuesday, May 23.
