St. Pats VB rolls to Northgate Tourney crown

As reported by SPSV coach, Danette Domecus

  This past Saturday, April 27th, the SPSV Boys Volleyball team competed in the final tournament of the season at the Northgate Varsity Tournament in Walnut Creek. St. Patrick-St. Vincent won the tournament.

  Even as the first seed in our pool it was a rough morning, with our outside hitter Gabe Domecus not feeling 100%. With a tight match vs 2nd seed Northgate, we made it through the morning, with the team pulling together and everyone contributing to find a way to come out first in our pool beating these teams;

  SPSV over Acalanes 25-14, 25-18

  SPSV over Northgate 23-25, 25-18, 17-15

  We then started the afternoon playing in the Gold Division Play-In. It was a slow start into the first set vs Concord, but SPSV eventually put it together to finish the match strong with great serving by Jordan Blakeley with 6 aces and Andrew Suacillo and Seve Passalacqua leading with 7 & 6 kills, to win over Concord 20-25, 25-12,15-5 to get in to the Gold division bracket.

  After a long break, that I think Gabe need to get himself feeling better and good enough to help his team again, we met up with De La Salle in the Semi Finals. We had a great passing match, which lead to lots of offense. Gabe Domecus lead his team with 15 kills, 13 digs, 5 aces and 1 block, also Nathaniel Agot with his great net play with 4 kills and 3 blocks help to seal the win in two sets 25-22, 25-16.

  Finally we got to meet up with a Division III team, the new kids on the block Drake, who was moved this season from NCS Division II to Division III. It was nice to see two D3 teams in the finals of the tournament, especially a teammate of Gabe’s, Drake’s big hitter Ben Sabastian. They played club together this past fall for Diablo Valley VB Club, who won their region and qualified to play in the Jr Nationals at the end of June in Reno, NV.

  Ben hit from everywhere for Drake, front and back row for many of Drakes points, they also had a good outside hitter #20 that had some great swings for them. They didn’t really have an answer for us, with Gabe Domecus leading his team with 15 kills, 14 digs 3 blocks and 1 ace, along with Matt Bohorquez’s 5 kills & 1 block, Andrew Suacillo’s 2 kills & 3 blocks, Ryan de Leon’s 7 digs & 1 ace and our setters Seve Passalacqua 11 assist & 1 ace and Pat Lago 10 assist & 1 ace and Jordan Blakeley with 4 serving aces. The Finals SPSV over Drake  25-18, 25-13, to take the championship.

  SPSV Overall Record 28-2 & TCAL 15-0
