Way of the Warthog

The vast majority of those who play rugby find a passion that they cannot ignore and a brotherhood that serves them for life.

I can attest to this. As a young-gun in Jr. College, I played for the Santa Rosa Ruby Club. Of the two years on the team, what sticks in my memory more than any single season or game is the parties that happened afterwards – with the opposing teams! That never happened in high school or club baseball or football. We were a brotherhoodL rugby players; like-minded, rough and tough… and above all, fascinatingly respectful. Rugby is, after all, a gentleman’s game!

The Santa Rosa Rugby Club existed for pretty much a singular reason, to give rugby enthusiasts (and washed-up football players) a second shot at playing the game. The Oakland Warthog Rugby Club is on a somewhat more honorable mission.

With a 100% success rate in helping young men off the street, to succeed in high school and find their way to college or career, rugby as well as all sports, has something to learn from the Way fo the Warthog. “We exist to improve the lives and character of young men in Oakland, while motivating them to obtain a college education.”
