Mater Dei captured back-to-back Open Division football titles for the first time since 2017-18 with a 37-15 victory Saturday against Concord De La Salle at the CIF State Championships at Saddleback College.
Mater Dei (13-0), which is expected to conclude the year as the top-ranked high school football team in the nation, remained unbeaten in five all-time appearances in the Open Division state finals.
The Monarchs defeated Concord De La Salle (12-1) – winner of six Open Division state crowns and seven titles overall since 2007 – for the third time in a championship game, in addition to 2017-18.
Mater Dei, which also prevailed in 2021 and last season against San Mateo Serra, is the only California football team to win at least five state championships without a loss.
Dash Beierly completed 18 of 27 passes for 355 yards and three touchdowns for Mater Dei, which led 23-0 at halftime.
Jordon Davison added 113 rushing yards on 17 attempts and two touchdowns for the Monarchs, who secured a state championship under their third different coach, with Raul Lara guiding Mater Dei to the title after Frank McManus achieved the feat last season.
Bruce Rollinson led the Monarchs to their first three state crowns.
Toa Faavae led De La Salle with 82 rushing yards on 11 carries, scoring both touchdowns for the Spartans, who are 7-10 all-time in state finals, including five consecutive losses since a 28-21 victory against Corona Centennial in the 2015 Open Division championship game.
