LOS ANGELES – For the second week in a row, Louis Bond had the most memorable moment in a clash of Gold Coast League boys basketball powers.
But for the second straight showdown, Brentwood School created the most lasting memory, outlasting Windward High in another overtime thriller.
Bond produced the tying basket once again at the end of regulation, driving and knocking down a 10-footer in the paint as time expired, but freshman Shalen Sheppard, sophomore AJ Okoh and seniors Shane Frazier and Bobby White helped the Eagles regroup and respond in the extra period to earn a 76-73 overtime victory and the program’s first league championship since 2013.
Sheppard had a game-high 23 points, including 13 in the second half and extra period, with Frazier contributing 18 points and Okoh adding 15 points for Brentwood (24-4, 7-1), which outlasted the Wildcats (19-7, 4-3) by a 70-66 margin in overtime Jan. 27 at Windward.
Bond, an Idaho State commit who hit the tying 3-pointer from the top of the key in the final seconds of regulation in the first meeting, had 15 of his 21 points in the second half and overtime in the rematch.
Jeremiah Hampton led Windward with 22 points – 11 in the second quarter to contribute to a five-point halftime lead – in addition to a three-point play with 50 seconds left in the third to increase the Wildcats’ advantage to 57-45.
Frazier and Sheppard combined to score eight unanswered points in the fourth to help the Eagles rally for a 62-61 lead with 3:25 remaining, before Bond responded with a pair of field goals in the next 70 seconds to give Windward a three-point advantage.
But Sheppard scored five consecutive points, including a free throw with 12 seconds left, to help Brentwood pull ahead 67-65, before Bond’s heroics extended the contest.
The Eagles, who endured a 70-67 league setback Saturday against Campbell Hall (17-8, 5-2) at the Intuit Dome, responded with five straight points in overtime after a free throw by Bond cut the deficit to 71-70 with 1:30 remaining.
Perry Rainey, who scored eight points, hit a 3-pointer as time expired for the Wildcats to account for the final margin.
JJ Harris added 10 points, including the first basket in overtime for Windward, which concludes its regular-season schedule Wednesday against Campbell Hall. Harris reached the milestone of 1,000 career points for the Wildcats.
Frazier, a Windward transfer, rebounded after struggling Saturday at Intuit Dome to score 10 first-half points Monday for the Eagles, who built a 22-11 first-quarter lead.
White had eight points and Reed Langan scored six points for Brentwood, which shared the Alpha League championship in 2013.
