Trail runners are resilient. We brave all the elements, from mud and rain to uneven terrain. We stay agile, bounding over tree roots and rocky paths, and we have the endurance to cover miles on end. That’s exactly what we need in a trail running shoe.
Those looking for a new pair should consider Dynafit’s Ultra 100 V3, a shoe designed for runners who prioritize comfort and support over long distances.
The Austrian company, known for its running and skiing gear, has built a strong reputation through decades of developing products for athletes tackling steep climbs and rugged terrain. With the third iteration of its Ultra 100 trail running shoe, Dynafit delivers a model that is responsive, comfortable, and equipped with the traction needed to handle challenging trails.
Here’s how the Ultra 100 V3 performed during our testing.
Performance and Features
One of the best aspects of the Ultra 100 V3 is its versatility without sacrificing performance. Although designed for trail running, we began testing the shoe on tracks and paved roads before taking it onto the trails.
The Dynafit Ultra 100 V3 provides excellent spring and responsiveness thanks to what the company calls its “Speed Foam” midsole. The midsole uses supercritical foam, which is approximately 20 percent lighter than traditional EVA foam.
We were pleasantly surprised by how light the shoes feel, making it easy to pick up the pace. With strong energy return, runners will experience a noticeable bounce and propulsion with every stride.
This makes the Ultra 100 V3 an excellent option for summer running. Combined with its generous cushioning, it performs well during both speed workouts and longer-distance efforts.
Speaking of mileage, this shoe was designed with ultrarunners in mind. It provides the support and comfort needed for hours of running without feeling heavy.
The shoe also excels at shock absorption on impact. Dynafit has integrated stabilizing elements into the midsole that support the foot both medially and laterally, helping runners maintain control on uneven and unpredictable trail surfaces.
For traction, the Ultra 100 V3 features a VIBRAM® Megagrip outsole with aggressive lugs. The grip is especially noticeable when climbing steep hills, and runners can confidently navigate slick leaves and muddy sections after rainfall.
Comfort
What stood out most during testing was how fresh our legs felt after runs and hikes in the Ultra 100 V3. While the shoe’s energy return certainly contributes to that feeling, its plush cushioning provides exceptional comfort without adding unnecessary bulk.
This model features a wider toe box than many other shoes in Dynafit’s lineup, allowing for added comfort on long runs. While the extra room is welcome, we found it beneficial to tighten the laces for a more secure fit before heading out. Overall, however, the Ultra 100 V3 delivers a locked-in and comfortable ride.
Durability
Another standout feature of the Ultra 100 V3 is its durability. After logging miles on roads, trails, and tracks—as well as using the shoe for hiking—we found it continues to perform exceptionally well with minimal signs of wear.
The Ultra 100 V3 has quickly become our go-to trail running shoe for summer training thanks to its combination of comfort, responsiveness, grip, and durability.
Launched in March, the Ultra 100 V3 showcases why Dynafit has earned a loyal following among trail and mountain athletes. As the European brand continues to expand its presence in the United States, this model demonstrates that it is well-positioned to make an impact in the trail running market.
Verdict: The Dynafit Ultra 100 V3 is a highly versatile trail running shoe that combines lightweight performance, excellent cushioning, dependable traction, and long-distance comfort. Whether you’re training for an ultramarathon, tackling technical trails, or mixing road and trail miles, this shoe is a strong contender for your next adventure.
