In just two short years, Kendall Derry has begun to write a championship-like script at Bella Vista High School in Fair Oaks.
In her freshman year, Derry finished third in the Sac-Joaquin Section Cross Country Championships in her first semester out of middle school. In the Spring of 2013, Derry won the section Div. II-III track and field title in the 1600 meters at 5 minutes, 4.77 seconds and followed that up with a second-place finish at Masters and was one of just five freshmen to qualify for the state meet in the 1600.
And she isn’t a one-sport star. Derry was also named a 2012 All-Capital Valley Conference tennis player for the Broncos and helped Bella Vista to the SJS Div. II title.
Derry obviously does not know the meaning of a sophomore slump.
In the fall, Derry won the section Div. II girls cross country title at 18:26 and finished 10th at the CIF State Cross Country Championships at Woodward Park in Fresno.
Derry helped lead Bella Vista to the DII team championship, the sixth overall title and second at DII.
This spring, Derry’s resume has flourish on the track.
The sophomore’s 1600 time this spring at 4:58.60 ranks as the top mark in the section and boasts the section best 800 of all runners in the region.
This week, Derry won the Capital Valley Conference title in the 800 and the 1600 at the CVC finals with eyes set on repeating as DII/DIII champion and becoming a Masters champ.
An impressive resume that will assuredly continue to grow and for her amazing accomplishments, Derry is this season’s V Award given to the Female Athlete of the Year.
