Diving Grand Master Champion, Bob Sherman post update:
Bob Sherman, founder of Sherman Swim School in Lafayette, has been chosen to be the Grand Marshall of this year’s Walnut Festival parade on Saturday, 9/15.
At 90 years old, he is once again Masters National Champion Diver from all levels (1 meter, 3 meter, and platform). Sherman Swim School, which he started in 1961, has taught swimming to over 38,000 students and continues to teach swimming and diving lessons to those in the East Bay.
Sherman Swim School was started by Bob Sherman in 1961. He was 33 at the time. Bob, a diving Grand Master Champion, is now 90 years young and with a celebrated past and a multitude of diving accolades, he retains his golden form and technique.
This isn’t our typical story at SportStars. Usually when we cover seniors, we mean high school. This story is about consistency and a lifelong passion that has kept a diver in the water and winners circle for decades.

Since those earlier days, Sherman Swim School has taught over 39,000 students to swim and turned out numerous diving champions. They are charter members of the United States Swim School Association in which Steve Sherman (now the school’s director) has served on the Board. Locals, Steve and Laurie Sherman took over the swim school in 1993, continuing a tradition of providing quality swimming and diving lessons in a positive environment.
Meanwhile, Bob Sherman (at 90 years old), just returned from the Masters Nationals bearing 5 gold medals.
The Indoor Masters Nationals took place in Ft Lauderdale, FL the weekend of May 18-20. There, he won the 90-95 age group in the 1 meter, 3 meter, and platform events. He also took gold as well in two Grand Master events which include the younger divers, the 80-89 year olds!
Bob had two competitors in his age group and was especially proud of his platform events which he does not get to practice very often. (The closest platforms are in Santa Clara or Stanford.)
