Negative emotions accumulate and become an entity of their own.” ― Eckhart Tolle

Psychologist Larry Steinberg did a study on adolescence looking at 10,000 American teenagers. In it he found that teens with warm, respectful, and demanding parents earned higher grades in school. He also found them to be more self-reliant, suffered from less anxiety and depression and were less likely to engage in delinquent behavior. And he asks, are you a psychologically wise parent?

The Psychologically Wise Parent

It matters what message a child receives — more than what the messages aimed to deliver. The message needs to, but often doesn’t match its intent. And kids process differently.

Often times parents miss the boat on this. I know this is hard for us parents to get, but if we tell our kids they are doing something incorrectly, when we have never played the game, or done that particular skill, what message are they really hearing?

Could it be something critical? “I spend good money on you to be good and you still suck at it. And though I’ve never played the sport, I can do it better than you”. Lets hope not.

Are your kids talking to you. Really talking. Sharing their frustrations? Being open?

Parents, your kids are trying to improve — run a little faster. Throw a little harder. Get a base hit.
