CLOVIS – Whether it was a California prep record, or a dramatic runoff, sprinters were in the spotlight Friday night during the prelims at the CIF State Track and Field Championships at Veterans Memorial Stadium at Buchanan High.
Jaden Jefferson, a junior at Concord De La Salle High, produced the fastest 100-meter dash performance in state history by running a wind-legal 10.01 seconds in his qualifying heat for Saturday’s final.
Jefferson eclipsed three exceptional career efforts by former Serra High standout Rodrick Pleasant in one remarkable race.

Jefferson eclipsed the all-conditions best mark by Pleasant with his wind-aided 10.09 performance in 2023 at the CIF-Southern Section Division 4 final.
Jefferson also ran faster than the wind-legal 10.14 effort that Pleasant produced that same season at the CIF-Southern Section Masters meet, in addition to the 10.20 state meet record that he achieved to repeat as champion two years ago at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Jefferson equaled the No. 5 all-time prep competitor, in addition to elevating to the No. 2 junior in U.S. prep history, trailing only Tate Taylor of San Antonio Harlan and his 9.92 performance May 3 at the Texas Class 6A state final.
Nicolas Obimgba, a junior at Torrance High, ascended to the No. 3 wind-legal performer in California prep history by clocking 10.20 in the 100 prelims, but that wasn’t even the most significant race he participated in Friday night.

Rodney Sermons, a junior at Rancho Cucamonga High, and Obimgba both clocked 21.184 in the 200-meter prelims and tied for the ninth and final qualifying berth, forcing a runoff to decide who would advance to Saturday’s state championship race.
Sermons competed in the 4×400-meter relay prelims for Rancho Cucamonga, then returned to the track more than 45 minutes later to race against Obimgba in the 200 runoff.
Sermons secured the final berth for the championship race, holding off Obimgba by a 21.11 to 21.31 margin in front of a loyal crowd of nearly 200 teammates, coaches, family members and spectators, more than three hours after he and Obimgba both qualified for the state final in the 100.
Antrell Harris of Birmingham equaled the No. 5 wind-legal competitor in state history by running 10.24 and Khairee Baker from American Canyon clocked 10.32, all in the same prelim race with Jefferson and Obimgba.
Sermons won his 100 prelim in a wind-legal 10.40, Demare Dezeurn of Alemany prevailed in his heat in a wind-legal 10.43 and Benjamin Harris from Servite clocked a wind-legal 10.49 to secure victory in his qualifying race.
