John put on his own personal shooting clinic, and he did on the biggest stage. The Cal Poly-bound swingman tied a CIF Division I State Championship record with six 3-pointers en route to a game-high 23-points as the Mustangs won their first state title. John hit his first five 3-point attempts, all in the first period, and finished 6 of 8 from behind the arc. He also added six rebounds in the 66-55 win over Centennial-Corona.
IN HIS OWN WORDS: “I was really just able to move well without the ball, and my great teammates were able to find me get me the ball. I got good looks and the shots just went down.”
WHAT YOU DIDN’T KNOW: John accepted a basketball scholarship to Cal Poly, but he also held Division I offers for baseball as well. He’s a pitcher and a three-year varsity player for the Mustangs.
Honorable Mentions
Paris Austin: The Bishop O’Dowd junior scored a team-high 23 points and added six rebounds in the CIF Open Div. final, a 71-61 loss to Mater Dei.
Kian McNair: The Salesian junior combined for 29 points, nine rebounds, five assists and four steals in the CIF Regional and State finals.
