The St. Francis sophomore led the girls’ championship race, while Crescenta Valley brought home a team victory for California.
California runners had plenty to celebrate at Nike Portland XC on Saturday, September 26.
St. Francis sophomore Alyssa Gutierrez won the girls’ Jim Danner Championship 5K at Blue Lake Regional Park in Fairview, Oregon, clocking 17:06.9.
ThunderRidge’s Jetta Betts finished second in 17:29.3, giving Gutierrez a winning margin of more than 22 seconds. St. Francis teammate Ellison Williams placed third.
Ranked No.1 in Northern California, Gutierrez also won the Kim Duyst Twilight Invitational 5-kilometer race earlier this month.
The team title came down to a tighter finish. Colorado’s ThunderRidge scored 89 points to edge St. Francis, which finished with 98. Despite placing two runners in the top three, the California team couldn’t quite hold off ThunderRidge overall.
North Eugene senior Ashenafi McKinnis took the individual boys’ title in 14:39.7. La Serna’s William Thompson followed in 14:42.1, just 2.4 seconds behind, while Marist’s Corbin Sage rounded out the podium in 14:55.2.
Crescenta Valley delivered California’s boys’ team victory, finishing with 155 points ahead of Oregon’s Grant with 172.
