AT THE NET

It’s hard to ever put a huge amount of stock into tournament results. That’s for two reasons: Matches are shorter, and it’s never a given that teams will be at full strength when they play them. Nine out of 10 times, we’re going to value a league match head-to-head win over a tournament one.

And that’s how it came to be that San Ramon Valley went 0-for-4 in the top flight of Saturday’s Stockton Classic, but still climbed one spot to supplant previous-No. 4 Amador Valley-Pleasanton (which went 2-2 in the same flight of the same tournament). However, San Ramon Valley won a set in all four of its Stockton Classic losses (which included matches vs. No. 2 Mitty-San Jose and new-No. 6 St. Mary’s-Stockton) — and it did so without its best player, senior outside hitter Audrey Ross.

Ross was on her future campus, attending events for Boston College commits. She was back on Tuesday and the Wolves rolled to a straight-set East Bay Athletic League win over Amador Valley. Fellow EBAL juggernaut, Monte Vista-Danville, moved up one spot to No. 5 after going 5-1 last week with its only loss to No. 1 St. Francis-Mountain View at the Stockton Classic. San Ramon Valley stays above them based on a 3-0 league win on Sept. 22. The two rivals face each other at SRV on Oct. 20.

Amador Valley and Branson-Ross, both of which had three losses last week, each dropped out of the Top 10. Amador fell to No. 11 and stays ahead of the No. 12 Bulls based on a head-to-head win in Stockton. Former No. 15 Burlingame was the only team to drop all the way out of the NorCal Volleyball Rankings this week.

Burlingame went 5-1 during the week, but lost to unranked Aragon-San Mateo in the championship match of Aragon’s tournament. Taking the Panthers spot is a Pitman-Turlock squad that has won 23 straight matches and are 66-9 in sets this season.
