FAST BREAKDOWN

Just five teams move down and two teams drop out of the NorCal Boys Basketball Rankings. Beyond that it was a whole lot of teams holding firm and a handful climbing. That’s not bad after two-plus weeks of high profile holiday tournament action.

That doesn’t mean there wasn’t a fair amount of losses for ranked teams, but nearly all of the defeats came against Southern California or out-of-state opponents. And in nearly ever instance, we don’t punish teams for those. It’s NorCal rankings, so NorCal results carry the most weight.

However, showing out in a SoCal tournament and coming back 4-0 with a trophy can certainly send you upward. That’s what San Ramon Valley-Danville did in the Gold Division of the prestigious Classic At Damien in La Verne. Our previous No. 4 Jesuit-Carmichael attended the same tournament and managed to go just 2-2, losing to a pair of teams (Roosevelt-Eastvale and Ironwood of Arizona) that SRV defeated en route to the title. And that’s why you now find the Wolves at No. 4.

The East Bay Athletic League can now claim five of the Top 11 teams in what’s been an unprecedented start to the 2022-23 season for that league. A sixth team, Monte Vista-Danville (12-3), sits right at the doorstep as well. At this point, we may be moving our boys ranking to Wednesdays in order to have Tuesday EBAL results. The Jan. 10 matchups will include San Ramon Valley against No. 3 Dougherty Valley-San Ramon.

There’s still good hoops being played outside of the East Bay’s Tri-Valley, though. The other team to crack the NorCal Boys Basketball Rankings this weeks is an undefeated Atwater squad. The Falcons are now 15-0 and have a win over a Santa Cruz team that has already beaten No. 18 Oakland and No. 20 St. Francis-Mountain View.

Just curious how you are compiling data for your rankings. Menlo Atherton beat Santa Cruz. Santa Cruz beat Oakland and St Francis by double digits. Yet, you have Oakland and St Francis ranked? Menlo Atherton’s only loss was to Riordan… With that said, your ranking system is seriously fraud. You either need to stop ranking based on favoritism or the word will get out Sports Stars rankings is a completely joke. GTFOH

We’re not going to rank a team based on one OT win. Though we do like M-A, and expect they’ll be in the mix very soon. We’re certainly intrigued with how they’ll do vs. San Ramon Valley on Saturday (Jan. 14). In the meantime, we’ll grant you that leaving St. Francis in was likely flawed (not fraud)

Just curious, where do you find Lincoln (of Stockton) 11-1, only lost to Mater Dei thus far. Thank you.

They’re definitely on our radar, Ralph. Best win so far looks like Antelope. For the Trojans, we’ve been waiting for the upcoming four-game stretch from 1/13-20 that includes Modesto Christian, Pleasant Valley-Chico and St. Mary’s-Stockton.
