Kaleena Smith and Tatianna Griffin are becoming accustomed to competing on some of the biggest stages in high school basketball, and Friday’s showcase by two of the youngest athletes in the Ontario Christian High lineup in their debut at the Army National Guard Hoophall Classic presented by Spalding was just another remarkable example.
Griffin, a freshman, and Smith – the elite sophomore prospect in the country – both played the entire game against Christ the King from New York, each scoring 26 points for the top-ranked Knights in an 87-75 victory at Blake Arena in Springfield, Mass.
Smith was recognized as the game’s most valuable player, adding 12 assists and five steals for Ontario Christian (23-1), which has secured victories this season competing in Arizona, California, Massachusetts and Texas.
Griffin contributed eight assists, six steals and five rebounds for the Knights, who led 45-26 at halftime en route to winning their ninth in a row.
Olivia Vukosa, one of the top junior forwards in the country, led Christ the King (8-4) with 25 points, nine rebounds, three assists and three blocks.
Arielle Lopez, a sophomore guard, had 15 points and seven assists, with freshman Alyssa Hidalgo scoring 14 points for Christ the King.
Alanna Neale, a senior, produced 15 points and seven rebounds, with sophomore Dani Robinson scoring 10 points and freshman Sydney Douglas adding seven points and six rebounds for Ontario Christian, which extended its lead to 27 points midway through the third quarter.
Sidwell Friends (Washington D.C.) 53, Archbishop Mitty 40: The Monarchs (12-2) shot only 14 of 46 (30.4 percent) from the field, made only 10 of 20 free-throw attempts and were outrebounded by a 40-24 margin at the Army National Guard Hoophall Classic presented by Spalding at Blake Arena.
Following the right ACL injury suffered by junior standout McKenna Woliczko in a Jan. 4 loss to Ontario Christian, Archbishop Mitty had rebounded to win three consecutive contests before traveling to Massachusetts.
But Jordyn Jackson and Autumn Fleary were too much for the Monarchs to overcome in their first of back-to-back contests at the Hoophall Classic, along with Saturday’s showdown against unbeaten Morris Catholic of New Jersey.
Jackson had 20 points and nine rebounds, with Fleary contributing 15 points, nine rebounds and five assists for Sidwell Friends (12-1).
Archbishop Mitty had only four athletes make field goals, with freshman Maliya Hunter producing 14 points, seven rebounds and four steals to be honored as the team’s most outstanding player in the contest, in addition to junior Abigail James contributing 10 points and five rebounds for the Monarchs, who trailed 36-29 entering the fourth quarter, before Sidwell Friends pulled away down the stretch.
