Madeleine Lane and Abdinasir Hassan Take Sweepstakes Titles at Woodbridge Classic

Southlake Carroll’s boys and Crater’s girls claimed team victories, while California runners earned top finishes against national competition.

Cross country runners took to the starting line at the 45th annual Woodbridge Cross Country Classic this weekend, testing their speed and endurance against some of the nation’s top high school athletes. Madeleine Lane and Abdinasir Hassan claimed the individual titles in the meet’s featured 3-mile Sweepstakes races at Great Park in Irvine on Saturday.

Lane, a senior at Hopkinton in New Hampshire, took home the win in 15:47.6. She finished 11.1 seconds ahead of Crater senior Brynn Davenport, who ran 15:58.7.

Addyson Johns of Santiago (Corona) was California’s top finisher, clocking 15:59.5 for third place. She was one of just three girls in the race to break 16 minutes.

The girls’ meet record, set by Santiago alumna Rylee Blade in 2024, remained intact.

Crater’s Adley Damon finished fourth in 16:00.8, helping the girls claim the team title with 104 points, ahead of New Jersey’s Union Catholic with 131. JSerra Catholic led California’s teams with a third-place finish and 219 points, followed by Boulder with 234.

St. Francis of Sacramento placed fifth with 247 points, led by sophomore Alyssa Gutierrez’s seventh-place finish in 16:08.0. Buchanan followed in sixth with 285, giving California three of the top six girls’ teams in the Sweepstakes field.

Hassan, a junior at Northfield in Colorado, won the Doug Speck Boys Sweepstakes race in 13:35.5. His time ranks as the third-fastest in meet history, behind Owen Powell’s 13:30.3 and Josiah Tostenson’s 13:30.5, both set in 2024.

Hassan finished five seconds ahead of Southlake Carroll junior Kai Gutierrez, who crossed the finish line in 13:40.5. Senior Elton Martin of The Woodlands followed closely in 13:40.7 to round out the top three.

California’s top finisher was Mt. Carmel senior Jaxon Northcutt, who placed fourth in 13:42.4.

Texas’ Southlake Carroll took the boys’ team title with 140 points. Utah teams Riverton and Herriman finished second and third with 182 and 253 points, respectively.
