There’s A New No. 3 In The NorCal Football Rankings, Plus A Preseason Top 20 Team Returns After A Mid-September Exit •

We didn’t get the seismic shift we could’ve had with a few more upsets, but last week’s five matchups between teams within the NorCal Football Rankings still revealed quite a bit.

Let’s start at the top where we have new teams from Nos. 3-5. St. Mary’s-Stockton became the third NorCal team to top De La Salle-Concord, outlasting the visiting Spartans 45-35. That win elevated the Rams two spots up to No. 3 where they have a strong chance of staying until late into the postseason.

After elevating St. Mary’s, we had to decide what to do with De La Salle and previous-No. 4 Pittsburg (which won its game over Liberty-Brentwood, but barely). We decided to drop the Spartans just one spot and keep them above the Pirates. It’s our belief that De La Salle remains the top team in the North Coast Section until an NCS team beats them. Pittsburg and DLS should meet in the NCS Open Division championship anyway.

No. 7 McClymonds-Oakland held on to its spot, but not without a major fight. The Warriors held off visiting San Ramon Valley-Danville 45-52 as the then-No. 16 Wolves certainly proved they belonged during their first week in the rankings. They are now No. 15.

Teams ranked No. 12-16 all got a one-spot bump this week due to No. 11 Vanden-Fairfield exiting the rankings. The Vikings were upended by unranked Vacaville 28-13. Also dropping out this week was No. 19 Rocklin, which fell 33-20 in its showdown against No. 13 Del Oro-Loomis.

Taking the spots of Vanden and Rocklin are new No. 17 Mitty-San Jose and No. 20 Clayton Valley-Concord, the latter of which returns (following a Week 3 exit) after a pair of strong wins. Both the Monarchs and Ugly Eagles have Top 20 opponents this week.

Now onto this week’s NorCal football rankings.
