The quarterback position at Corona del Mar has become one coveted spot.
The reigning CIF-SS Division 3 and state 1-A champion Sea Kings have two senior transfers in a five-man competition after the recent arrival of former Mission Hills of San Marcos quarterback Jackson Oksnee, Corona del Mar football coach Dan O’Shea confirmed Wednesday.
O’Shea said Oksnee, a 6-foot, 185-pound senior, is working toward enrolling at Corona del Mar, which like the rest of Orange County has postponed summer activities amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Senior quarterback Cooper Wrenn (6-4, 200) earlier transferred to Corona del Mar from Jesuit in Oregon. Jesuit was one of the best teams in Oregon last season, finishing 10-3.
Corona del Mar’s group also includes highly-regarded sophomore David Rasor (6-1, 175), junior Max Lane and senior Dane Voorhees. Lane and Voorhees were junior varsity quarterbacks last season. Voorhees also is Corona del Mar’s kicker.
The Sea Kings are looking to replace record-setting quarterback Ethan Garbers, now at Washington. Last season, he passed for 5,035 yards and 71 touchdowns — both Orange County records — in leading Corona del Mar to a 16-0 record.
Garbers built off the foundation laid by his brother Chase Garbers, a 2017 graduate now playing quarterback at Cal.
O’Shea describes the five quarterbacks as competitive, all believing they that can be the starter.
The coach believes part of the lure of the position is offensive coordinator Kevin Hettig. “He’s brilliant,” O’Shea said.
