FAST BREAKDOWN

Despite all the holiday tournaments and anticipated matchups, this version of the NorCal Girls Basketball Rankings looks a lot like the last one. Archbishop Mitty, of course, stays No. 1 – and since they’re No. 1 in the whole U.S. of A., it pretty much makes sense they’re the best in Northern California.

The usual suspects fill out the Top 10, but two things may shake up these otherwise fairly quiescent rankings: 1) The weekend shootouts that will dot the January schedule, and 2) the eligibility of transfers who had to sit out until Jan. 1.

But the fate of the perhaps the biggest-impact transfer, Tiassa Quieroz of Cardinal Newman, is still uncertain. Rumor has it that legal avenues are being pursued to get the highly regarded Brazilian on the court, and if North Coast Section does relent — as it often does when faced with a potentially expensive legal challenge — Cardinal Newman may even be able to threaten Mitty for the NorCal Open title.

Folsom is also awaiting a possible reinforcement, as Ava Rawlins may soon return from an injury. Adding her to an already potent mix of talent could give the team that only lost to national No. 6 Sierra Canyon-Chatsworth by 11 in the West Coast Jamboree enough of a boost to seriously challenge Mitty.

St. Mary’s of Stockton has at least one newcomer ready to step on the court right away, but it’s still unclear if Antelope transfer Evelini Smith will play this season.

Eventually, though, all the administrative details will be sorted out. By the MLK weekend, all the teams will have the rosters they’ll have in postseason. And at that point, we will finally see what the NorCal playoff teams will really look like.

Well, except for Mitty. Barring injury, Sue Phillips will roll out the best roster Northern California has ever seen, and it will take an upset of monumental proportions to keep Archbishop Mitty from reaching the Open Division championship game.
