HOKA launched its latest sneaker on Friday with the release of the Mafate 5, a high-performance shoe designed for long-distance runners who push the limits on rugged terrain.

The Mafate 5 delivers plush cushioning and an aggressive grip to provide comfort and stability when hitting the trail.

“We know the unique challenges ultra-runners face when on the trail. That’s why we’ve developed a shoe that meets their specific needs, offering durability to withstand the harshest environments, adaptability to adjust to varying terrains, and comfort to keep them going,” said Bekah Broe, Senior Director of Product, Performance Footwear at HOKA. “We know every stride counts, and our updates to the Mafate 5 will give runners the confidence and support they need to tackle the trail, no matter how grueling it gets out there.”

 HOKA Mafate 5 Features

Engineered for extreme terrains, the outsole of the HOKA Mafate 5 features Vibram Megagrip with Traction Lug technology, providing ample surface control when hitting

the ground to prevent runners from losing their footing.

While the grip feature steals the show, HOKA also added an innovative feature with its all-new Rocker Integrity Technology that helps the shoe maintain its shape even after putting in high mileage. Sandwiched between a firmer SCF EVA layer directly underfoot and the CMEVA foam layer, this feature provides a suspended ride experience that lets the rider be springy in their step while the shoe absorbs uneven terrain and adapts to the trail. This feature increases durability and protects the sneaker from debris when on the trail while providing a responsive foot strike and efficient toe-off.

The Mafate 5 also has a new flow-molded TPU cage that provides 360-degree protection, which is a nod to the HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc course map that is etched within the design.

HOKA is also adding the first-ever shoe featuring an ankle gaiter integration system for additional protection when facing the elements. This accessory is sold separately.

The sneaker comes in at 8.10 ounces (women’s) and 11.7 ounces (men’s), which is heavier than the Mafate Speed 4, another shoe recommended for rocky terrains. However, the sneaker does not weigh the runner down.

It also has an 8mm heel-to-toe drop. This makes it a great option for those looking to transition from a road running shoe to a trail running option.

This is a neutral stability trail running shoe that goes heavy on the cushioning for added comfort to ease impact for endurance runners.

All these features make the HOKA Mafate 5 a sneaker that is engineered for the extremes of trail running.

HOKA Mafate 5 Review: A Must-Have For Trail Runners

Upon putting these shoes on, a runner can instantly feel the soft and squishy cushioning that provides comfort for both a short a three-mile run, and after logging some higher mileage. In short, the runner feels like they are running on clouds. This makes it easier to increase milage, espeically when on unforgiving paths.

The best part is the foot doesn’t feel rocks and other trail debris when stepping out in the great outdoors. Comfort level is at an all-time high with the Mafate 5.

Running shoes with lots of cushion often feel bulky and heavy. This isn’t the case here. The shoe still surprisingly feels lightweight when leaping over tree branches and rocks, allowing runners to run light on their feet.

The best feeling is the spring in the runner’s step, thanks to the amount of responsiveness the Mafate 5 has. It’s impossible to deny the bounce once the feet strike down and then lift up. These shoes really help with efficiency as they aid in propelling the runner forward.

The main attraction here is the traction. These feel sticky on terrain, especially when on the road or running on freshly wet trails. The shoes allow for quick stops to avoid obstacles on the path.

Besides the secure ride, durability is key here. Even after logging solid mileage, there was limited wear and tear after trekking through rough and tough terrain. These are meant to hold up well for the long haul.

The HOKA Mafate 5 trail running shoes are available on the company’s website for $185.
