It’s true that all that is needed to run is a pair of sneakers and some motivation. In reality, there are a few more essential items for fall running that are needed to make sure we go outside feeling prepared and confident in logging some miles.

There is a magic to running in crisp fall air with the leaves tumbling down. But runners can’t magically think they will be able to perform to their best ability if they are shivering, wet, and at risk of accidents or injury when visibility is low. This is why it’s important to have a checklist of all the running gear needed to keep comfort at the forefront so that runners can focus on boosting performance.

Here’s a head-to-toe guide to the must-have fall running essentials.

Top 10 Essential Fall Running Gear Checklist

  1. Lightweight, water-resistant jacket
  2. Moisture-wicking base layer
  3. Reflective vest or bands
  4. Headlamp or chest light
  5. Thermal or thicker material tights or leggings
  6. Moisture-wicking socks
  7. Running gloves
  8. Beanie, headband, or buff
  9. Fall-running shoes (trail shoes or road sneakers)
  10. Running belt or vest

1. Lightweight Jacket

A fall running must-have is a lightweight, breathable jacket that can be worn as an outer layer. Look for an option that is water-resistant in case of light rain, and keep runners warm in the wind. Avoid thick materials, and instead make sure there are zippers and mesh panels for ventilation. Reflective details are also a bonus because fall mornings and early evenings are dark.

2. Base Layer

Underneath that running jacket should be moisture-wicking athletic shirts that keep runners cool and dry without the sweat sticking to the skin. Always avoid cotton as a base layer. For those chilly mornings, start with a long-sleeve base layer. There are some shirts that have thumbholes that keep the hands protected.

3. Weather-Appropriate Running Bottoms

Fall weather is tricky because it can be unpredictable. For early fall, runners can still get away with wearing shorts but may choose to pair this with a long-sleeve outer layer on top for a little warmth. But for those cooler mornings, it might be time to get out the thermal tights or leggings, or at least those made of thick material.

4. Reflective Gear

Fall brings with it low-light conditions for outdoor runs. This is why reflective gear is a must-have this season. There are many product options available that all increase visibility. This includes reflective vests, armbands, and clip-on LED lights. Trail runners might opt for a headlamp or chest light to illuminate the path so that runners can avoid wet leaves, tree roots, and the like.

5. Moisture-Wicking Socks

Runners need moisture-wicking socks to keep their feet dry and blister-free so they can run comfortably. Skip a cotton pair and make sure to wear socks that are designed for runners. Always have a dry pair on hand for after a run.

6. The Right Shoes for Fall Surfaces

Expect running through puddles, wet grass from dew, and slick leaves in the fall. The right type of sneakers is arguably the most essential gear needed. Those who run on trails or paths known to be covered in leaves need a reliable pair of trail running shoes. Trail sneakers provide more traction to grip the surface and prevent slips. They also provide more stability needed for uneven surfaces. Shoes are your most important investment, especially when conditions get slick. For road runners, choose a pair that has a water-resistant upper or outsoles designed to handle wet pavement.

Make sure to rotate between two pairs at least to extend the shelf life of the shoes. It’s smart to have a pair for wet conditions and dry weather.

7. Gloves and Headgear

Most body heat escapes from your head and hands, so covering them helps regulate temperature. Essential fall running gear includes a moisture-wicking hat, a breathable beanie, a headband to cover the ears, or a buff.

Those early chilly mornings might also require running gloves. Make sure these are a lightweight pair to prevent sweaty hands. There are even options that come with touchscreen compatibility for checking your watch or phone.

Other Fall Running Accessories

  • Running belt or vest: to carry your phone, keys, or mid-run snacks.
  • Anti-fog sunglasses: for those bright mornings.
  • Gaiters: for trail runners who want to keep out mud, leaves, and small rocks.
