SportStar Of The Week Ethan Thompson, Torrance Basketball, Senior
The Torrance basketball shooting guard Ethan Thompson scored a game-high 21 points to go along with five rebounds. And with the help of 15 fourth-quarter points from teammate Jordan Schakel they led the Knights to a 70-63 win over then state-No.1 Sierra Canyon-Chatsworth. This was in the Southern Section Open Division semifinal at the Galen Center in Los Angeles on Feb. 24. Furthermore, it was the first loss to a California opponent this season for the Sierra Canyon. They entered the game as high as No. 2 in some national rankings. The win also moved Bishop Montgomery into a March 4 finals matchup with Mater Dei-Santa. Mater Dei-Santa upended Chino Hills in the other semifinal.
The Knights also assumed the new No. 1 spot in the Cal-Hi Sports state rankings. Thompson is signed to play at Oregon State where his brother Stephen Jr. currently plays and his dad Stephen is an assistant coach.
