In today’s busy world, we often eat quickly and mindlessly. This year’s theme for National Nutrition Month is “Savor the Flavor of Eating Right,” and it’s a great reason to slow down our eating and really tune in to the wonderful foods we have in front of us.
How, when and why you eat are just as important as what you eat. Take time to appreciate the flavors, textures and overall eating experience. Enjoy the sights, sounds, memories and interactions associated with eating “” it will add to the satisfaction of the meal. This will also help you make sure you’re eating enough and not too much. That way you’ll feel comfortable and energized after you eat.
Besides being a mindful eater, here are a few additional ways to enhance your eating experiences:
>> Discuss nutrition at the dinner table. Tell each other what your favorite meal is, or your favorite fruit or vegetable. Talk about foods you’d like to try.
>> Take a field trip to the local farmer’s market or to a local farm to see how food actually grows.
>> Have the whole family get involved in planning and preparing a meal.
>> Do a taste testing of a food you’ve never tried. Pay attention to the colors, textures, flavors.
