AT THE NET

Our first NorCal Volleyball Rankings for 2022 look an awful like the last set we did for 2021. The same two teams are at the top — though they’re flipped this time around.

St. Francis-Mountain View begins the season at No. 1 for us as they’ve cruised to an 11-0 start with a win over No. 2 Archbishop Mitty-San Jose. The Lancers also have wins over three other ranked teams (No. 6 Branson-Ross, No. 9 Sacred Heart Prep-Atherton and No. 18 Valley Christian-San Jose). But perhaps the No. 1 team’s most impressive feat to date is that it has yet to drop a set. They are 28-0 so far.

Two undefeated Sac-Joaquin Section teams have spots No. 3 and No. 4 with Monte Vista — one of five East Bay Athletic League teams inside the Top 20 — rounding out the Top 5. It will likely be a week or two before we truly are able to figure out the correct EBAL pecking order, but for now the defending North Coast Section Div. I champs have the edge. A sixth (!) EBAL team, California-San Ramon, is 13-1 and sits on the outside looking in. They did defeat No. 19 San Ramon Valley last week, but SRV has a couple more key wins, including No. 8 Foothill-Pleasanton and No. 15 Carondelet-Concord.

The Durango Fall Classic will take place this weekend in Las Vegas and three of our Top 20 will be there. No. 2 Mitty, No. 6 Branson and No. 14 St. Ignatius-S.F. will be desert-bound. We’re most interested in seeing how Branson does, as the Bulls have just five matches under their belts so far.

Hello chase. You failed to recognize Folsom Bulldawgs are 11-0 to start the year, do you have other teams ranked with a few losses and barely any games under their belt. Where is the love for Folsom???

Hi Matt, we put the rankings together before Folsom’s win over Ponderosa on Tuesday that pushed the team to 11-0. So we had them at 10-0 … but with only three wins over teams with a winning record (Bradshaw Christian, Roseville and Vista del Lago). Ponderosa became the fourth of those wins. For that reason, we were taking a wait-and-see approach on the Bulldogs. (Notably, we’re doing the same with Del Oro, who also hasn’t lost). … You can be sure we’ll be watching to see how Folsom does Thursday against No. 17 Rocklin. If they win that game, they’ll have a great shot at being ranked next week.
