AROUND THE HORN
Knowing that the Boras Classic would be running Monday-Thursday of last week and would be including several ranked teams, in addition to it being a busy tournament week throughout the state, we took last week off and let the NorCal Baseball Rankings breathe for an extra week.
And good googly-moogly did we get a shakeup worth the wait.

Let’s start with the NorCal Boras Classic champion, Cardinal Newman-Santa Rosa. The Cardinals were the only team from our March 27 Top 20 that stayed unbeaten through both weeks. They went 6-0 overall and their four-win stretch at the Boras Classic included defeats over Oak Ridge-El Dorado Hills, St. Mary’s-Stockton and finally Bellarmine-San Jose in the championship. All three of those teams are now inside the Top 10.
Newman takes over at No. 2, right behind new No. 1 Valley Christian-San Jose. The Warriors reclaim the top spot after shutting out previous-No. 1 Mitty-San Jose 4-0 in West Catholic Athletic League play. The Monarchs also went just 2-2 at the Boras, with losses to Oak Ridge and St. Mary’s-Stockton.
The WCAL team that did shine at the Boras, Bellarmine, jumps up to No. 3. Whitney-Rocklin — which went 6-1 over the two weeks with its only loss coming to Mitty at the Boras — moves up one spot to No. 4. (Yes, ahead of Mitty since tournament baseball can get weird, plus they also have wins over De La Salle-Concord, Clayton Valley-Concord and Lodi).
Oak Ridge jumps 11 spots to round out the Top 5. The Trojans also went 6-1 over the last two weeks and now have wins over four ranked teams: No. 3 Bellarmine, No. 6 Mitty, No. 11 Franklin-Elk Grove and No. 18 Marin Catholic-Kentfield.
A pair of Stockton teams move into the rankings this week. St. Mary’s debuts at No. 10 after going 5-3 and chalking up Boras Classic wins over Mitty and Franklin. Meanwhile, Lincoln enters at No. 14 after going 6-0 and picking up a win over No. 8 St. Francis-Mountain View (which moved up three spots from No. 11 after sweeping a doubleheader vs. De La Salle).
Serra-San Mateo moves from the “5 Knocking” Space and back into the rankings at No. 15. They own a win over St. Francis, as well as Los Gatos. The latter took over No. 20 this week after going 6-0 and knocking off former-No. 13 Hollister 7-4.
Key matchups to watch this week: No. 16 Granada-Livermore and No. 17 Foothill-Pleasanton will play their two-game East Bay Athletic League series. No. 18 Marin Catholic will face No. 2 Cardinal Newman in a nonleague tilt. No. 19 Dublin faces No. 9 De La Salle before a pair of EBAL games against Amador Valley-Pleasanton (11-1 and leading the Knocking teams).
