Oakland Tech Girls Basketball, Davis Boys Soccer Survive Week-Plus Vote And Social Media Playoffs To Earn NorCal Team Of The Year Honors •

In the month of June, when so many Athlete Of The Year honors are bestowed, we wanted to start something that also honored the collective and not just the individual. That goal gave birth to the NorCal Team Of The Year vote.

We selected eight teams from eight different schools and eight different sports. They were (from fall to spring): Grant-Sacramento football, Miramonte-Orinda girls water polo, St. Francis-Mountain View girls volleyball, Davis boys soccer, Dougherty Valley-San Ramon boys basketball, Oakland Tech girls basketball, De La Salle-Concord boy golf and Oak Ridge-El Dorado Hills softball.

YES! We know how many more teams could’ve made the list. We couldn’t list all of them, so we tried to get a cross section of different sports while also finding representatives of different regions.

With the promise of producing a SportStories Podcast episode for top boys and girls vote-getters, we held an online vote here at SportStarsMag.com. After six days and more than 3,000 votes, we used the standings to seed a bracket for knockout rounds on our social media channels.

After Twitter poll quarterfinals and an intense Instagram-based semifinal round, the Oakland Tech girls basketball and Davis boys soccer team emerged as our winners.

NorCal Team Of The Year

Here’s a bit about each of the winning squads, and we hope you’ll keep your eye out for the podcast episodes in the coming weeks.

DAVIS BOYS SOCCER: With a 22-0-2 unbeaten record and the CIF NorCal Division I championship plaque in their possession it’s hard not to label the Blue Devils the most dominant boys soccer team of the winter. But in case you weren’t sure, Davis won six of its seven postseason games by shutout.

OAKLAND TECH GIRLS BASKETBALL: The definition of a championship team that invites all comers to take their best shot. After winning state titles at Division IV and III, the Bulldogs begged for the bigger stage. They got it and went 30-5 on their way to a Division I state title. (Their state playoff win streak is at 19 games).

We hope to post the first of the two podcasts during the week of July 17-21. In the meantime, check out some of our recent SportStories podcasts featuring some of the state’s legends in Track & Field.
