These Are All The Skills Named After Simone Biles

There is no denying that Simone Biles has made history in gymnastics. The most decorated gymnast of all time—who has never lost a World Championship competition–has six Olympic medals. Biles will attempt to add more medals to her award collection when she competes representing the United States in the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics.

The world was reminded of her talent and perseverance throughout her career in the new Netflix documentary series Simone Biles Rising, which was released on July 17. Biles is a sight to see when performing her routines. She makes her challenging skills look effortless—even now after her comeback after the “twisties” resulted in her dropping out from The Tokyo Games in 2020.

In this summer’s U.S. Gymnastic Olympic Trials, Biles was able to rewrite her narrative, proving that at age 27 she isn’t too old to compete. She came back stronger than ever, making her third-straight Olympic team. This is something that hasn’t been done since Dominique Dawes when she competed in 1992, 1996, and 2000. Not only did she make the team, but she also finished as the top competitor.

Biles is often considered the greatest gymnast of all time. And rightfully so. She has five skills in the sport named after her. Gymnastics moves are named after the athlete when they are the first to execute them in international competitions.

The Biles 1 On Vault

The first vault skill named after the Olympian is a roundoff on the springboard that goes directly into a half-turn onto the vault. The skill then features two full twists before sticking the landing. She debuted this skill in 2018, and it was named after her at the 2018 Worlds. It has a 6.00 difficulty value.

Biles II on Vault

The second gymnastics skill named after Biles on vault increases the difficulty, with a value of 6.4. It’s the most recent move named after her. It was previously known as the Yurchenko double pike before it now being known as the Biles II after she successfully performed the skill in the qualifying round of the 2023 World Championship. (Biles has been performing the skill since 2021). This skill is typically done by men and is the most difficult vault skill when it comes to scoring.

The Biles II includes a roundoff onto the springboard that goes into a back handspring onto the vault. With straight legs, Biles then completes two backflips. It is described as being Yurchenko half-on with two twists. She is the only woman who tried to complete the skill in a competition, and who can.

The Biles On Balance Beam

The balance beam skill named after Simone Biles is a mouthful. It’s a double-twisting double-tucked salts backwards dismount.

In layman’s terms, the dismount consists of a double-twisting black flip. It has a difficulty score value of H, which is eight-tenths of a point.

The Biles on Floor

This move was named after Biles back at the 2013 World Championship. It is her signature move on the floor, consisting of a double layout with a half twist. It has a difficulty value of G, and she is known to progress the skill to increase the challenge and keep her routine fresh. It’s typically her second tumbling pass.

The Biles on Floor II

The Biles on Floor II is a triple-double, which is two flips and three twists when tucked. She completed this skill for the first time at the 2019 US Gymnastics Championship and then was named after the skill after the 2019 Worlds. It has a J difficulty level.

Simone Biles is set to compete in her third Olympic Games when the 2024 Paris Olympics begins July 28 with the qualification rounds.
