It took the Mater Dei High girls basketball team a little longer than anticipated to find its offensive rhythm Monday night against Windward in the Platinum Division final of the West Coast Jamboree.
After producing knockout punches early in tournament contests against Oakland Tech and Bishop Montgomery, the Monarchs found themselves trailing following the first quarter of the championship game at Dublin High.
But Mater Dei quickly responded with eight straight points to open the second quarter and put Windward away with a 22-point outburst in the third to capture the Platinum Division crown for the first time since 2019 with a 65-49 victory.
Addie Deal had a game-high 20 points, to go along with 10 rebounds and eight assists, earning the David Scoop Jackson MVP award for the Monarchs (15-2), who also won the Platinum Division championship in 2013 and the Diamond Division title in 2007 at the annual Northern California event.
Deal, an Iowa signee, finished with 63 points, 28 rebounds and 20 assists in three tournament contests for Mater Dei, which led Windward by a 27-18 margin at halftime.
Junior Kaeli Wynn, an all-tournament honoree, added 18 points, 12 rebounds and three assists, accumulating 69 points and 28 rebounds overall for the Monarchs.
Wynn had 10 points in the third, including a pair of 3-pointers, outscoring Windward (8-6) by herself in the quarter, as Mater Dei limited the Wildcats to seven points during the eight-minute stretch.
Amaya Williams, a Grand Canyon commit, contributed 10 points and four assists, Stella Hoss had seven points and Southern Utah-bound Devyn Kiernan added two points, each receiving all-tournament recognition for the Monarchs, who won their fourth in a row against Windward following seven consecutive losses from 2006-19.
It marked the first time the Southern Section programs squared off in a regular-season contest since the 2006 Nike Tournament of Champions in Arizona, with the past nine matchups between the teams being showcased during the postseason.
Charis Rainey, Samari Bankhead, Amel Cook and Olivia Lagao combined for 24 points in the fourth for the Wildcats, but it wasn’t nearly enough for Windward, which trailed 49-25 entering the final quarter.
Bankhead, a Central Florida signee, had 13 points and converted all six free-throw attempts, receiving the Jim Capoot Memorial award.
Rainey also scored 13 points, Cook added 10 points and Lagao contributed eight points, all earning all-tournament honors for Windward, which produced victories against Kamehameha Kapalama from Hawaii and Sacramento McClatchy to reach the Platinum Division final.
Mater Dei, which won its second tournament championship this season along with the I MUA Invitational in November in Honolulu, Hawaii, is scheduled to compete at home against Corona Centennial (5-7) on Jan. 4 as part of the inaugural Kiernan Classic.
Windward plays Jan. 7 against Campbell Hall (8-4) in a Gold Coast League contest.
Woodside Priory 53, Mountain View St. Francis 47: One winning streak was extended to 10 in a row and another was halted following 10 consecutive victories in the Diamond Division final Monday at Carondelet High.
The Panthers (10-1) received 13 points, including four 3-point field goals, from senior Vienn Sheng and junior Adelaide Chan added 10 points to hold off St. Francis (10-1).
Priory opened the season with a 59-40 setback Nov. 23 to Clovis, but has since produced 10 straight wins, including Perry High from Arizona and Chaminade to advance to the championship game.
Ugreat Daniels scored eight points, including six in the fourth quarter, with Natalie Neumann adding seven points and Nani Tuigamala contributing six points for Priory, which led 37-34 after the third.
Maia Jimenez had 13 points, highlighted by eight in the first half, for St. Francis, which defeated San Joaquin Memorial and Fairmont Prep to reach the Diamond Division final.
Grace Curley produced 12 points, including eight in the second half, Katia Grizelj scored 10 points – featuring three 3-point field goals – and Paige Spencer had seven points for the Lancers, who trailed 26-22 at halftime.
St. Francis will look to rebound Jan. 4 against Colfax (8-5).
Priory is scheduled to compete Jan. 14 against Pinewood (4-1), looking to add to its impressive run.
