The St. John Bosco wrestling team had another night of dominance, Thursday at the USA TODAY High School Sports Award show.
Senior Nathan Haas, a two-time CIF State wrestling champion, was selected the Los Angeles area Wrestler of the Year. He was also a finalist for the Athlete of the Year award.
Haas (182 pounds) posted a 50-1 record, with his only loss coming at the Doc Buchanan tournament. The Nebraska-bound Haas was the Press Telegram’s Dream Team wrestler of the year.
“This year he really solidified how great he was and how much he could accomplish. … He dominated,” Bosco wrestling coach Jeff Anderson said of Haas.
Haas defeated La Costa Canyon’s Joe Curtis 4-3, in the CIF State final.
The Braves captured the Southern Section Division 1 Dual Meet, Central Division and Masters Meet championships and finished second at the state finals. They also took home the Team of the Year award and Anderson was the USA TODAY Coach of the Year.
The awards show was aired virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The show honored Fall and Winter athletes. The process began with a list of nominees, which was then paired down three finalists for each sport.
Other local winners include: Warren’s Samantha Martinez and Isaiah Mora in the Special Olympics Athlete of the Year, Christopher Guillen (Mayfair) received the I Am Sport Award. Guillen and his brother Marchs created The Just Breathe foundation in the honor of their mother Rocio, who was killed in the Route 91 Country Music Festival shootings in Las Vegas. Their foundation sponsors at risk youth and children in need.
St. John Bosco football players Kourt Williams and DJ Uiagalelei were finalists for the Defensive and Offensive Player of the Year awards, respectively.
