Running Review Week Ending November, 14th

With the Utah State track and field meet behind us, we now shift our focus to the nationwide cross country running review. Lets dive right in. We have ten meets and a Section Championship to cover!

Arizona State Meet 11-12

A meet filled with records and personal bests. Dayton Carlson of Casteel had the fastest time of the day. He was victorious in the Boys’ Division 2 race with a time of 15:06. Max Davis of Flagstaff placed second in 15:24, which is a time that would have won the other divisions. Terence Keys of Gilbert finished third in 15:43 and led his squad to the team title 77 to 82 over Flagstaff.

Logan Marek of Ironwood Ridge placed 4th with 15:47. Roshan Tinoco-Miranda of Rio Rico claimed the D3 race with 15:32 for a fifteen-second victory over Gilbert Olivas of Cactus. Trent Holiday of Page claimed third in 15:53. Xander Black of Brophy College Prep scored in the D1 race with 15:34 and led his team to the championship as well.

Noah Jodon of Desert Vista was a close second in 15:37 and Austin Clayton of Mountain Ridge came in third with 15:49. Noah Czajkowski of Red Mountain nipped Elijah Poelman of Highland for 5th with both sharing the mark of 15:53. Wyatt Hanson of Desert Vista followed in 7th with 15:57 edging Jackson Moran of Brophy by a second. Gabe Parham of Desert Vista ran 15:59 to take ninth. Richie Johnston of North Phoenix Prep earned laurels in D4 with his time of 16:03 for a twelve-second margin over Jon Barney of Veritas Prep.

Lauren Ping of Desert Vista won the girls’ Division 1 race in 17:13, which was also the fast time by a female in the meet. Her DV team Katie Sigerud raced home in17:38 to help her team claim the team title and Kayla Case of Highland placed third with 18:01. Taylor Lovell of Perry came in 4th with 18:02 and Emma Baugh of Highland secured 5th with 18:04 and Grace Ping of DV was 6th in 18:18.

Mia Hall of Flagstaff clocked 17:54 to lead Flagstaff to the team title. Kyah Zurek of Casteel, whose team finished 2nd, placed second herself with 18:07 and Clara Jones of Campo Verde claimed third with 18:09. The D3 race was a tight contest to the end with Kylie Wild of Salpointe nipping Evelynne Carr of American leadership Academy with bot sharing the time of 18:37. Kayla O’Connell of Morenci led the D4 field with 19:57 earning a two-second victory over Jessica Madrid of Round Valley.

Rhode Island State Meet 11-14

The boys’ race at Ponaganset proved quite interesting and going into the race the championship seemed a toss-up. With last years’ champion having graduated, the 2nd through 4th place finishers all returned and, when the dust had settled, they finished in the same order as last fall.

Jack McLoughlin of La Salle Academy moved up to claim the championship in a time of 15:27. Evan Reynolds of Bishop Hendrickson placed second in 15:33 and Chase leach of LaSalle finished 3rd a second behind him. Fourth went to Darius Kipyego off St. Raphael Academy, who had placed sixth last year and ran 16:00. Alex Maxwell of La Salle clocked 16:01 to earn sixth.

Reese Fahys of East Greenwich triumphed in the girls’ race with her time of 17:43 and defeated the defending State Champion. Kaylie Armitage finished second despite improving on last year’s winning time by26 seconds and ran 17:58. Sophia Gorriaran of Moses Brown captured third with 18:13 and Rylie Shunney of East Greenwich followed in 4th with 18:25 to improve on her fifth-place effort of last year.

North Jersey Section Championship 11-14

They ran at Garrett Mountain again and the state’s top female runner was not far off the course record that she set last week, when she walloped the field and groups with her clocking of 17:31. Christina Allen of River Dell placed 2nd in the overall 2nd best time of 18:30 and Mia Dubac of Clifton won Group 4 with the 3rd best time of 18:40 to best AnnaMarie Trelola of Ridgewood by 5 seconds.

Jacob Heredia of Clifton topped Group 4 Boys with his mark of 16:19: the top time of the day. Nathan Armstrong of Pompton Lakes scored in Group 1 with 16:25 to have a 5-second gap over Jack Kellaher of North Warren, who placed 2nd in the Group. Bobby Hymans of Ramapo won Group 3 in 16:28.

Sadly there will be no Meet of Champions so this is the last race for New Jersey runners.

Town USA Meet of Champions 11-14

With Foot Locker and Nike deciding bowing out over the Covid pandemic being too great a threat to the health of fans and participants, National Scholastic put together a make-shift National Race. Although numerous key runners on the national level were missing; like Abby Vanderkooi and Jenna Hutchins for the girls plus Nathan Green among others missing the final result, it was yet a valiant attempt to offer elite runners something special at the end of a generally frustrating fall.

The meet was held on the famed LaVern Gibson course in Terre Haute but the running gods did not bless the event with quality weather and the runners faced wind and rain. Times have to be considered well slower than they normally might have been.

The boys race included at least ten state champions in the field but Judson Greer, a 2019 Foot Locker alumnus who still awaits this year’s State meet, pulled away from Michigan’s Hobbs Kessler, (who placed 2nd in D1), to win by two seconds in a time of 15:14.

Inclement Weather

Given the inclement weather, the times were quite good, and finishing in the next three places were state champions to underscore the quality of the field.

Luke Schildmeyer (Illinois D3 champion) nipped Nathan Walker (Michigan D2 champion) for third with both sharing the time of 15:20. Nathan Moore Ohio D1 champ) placed 5th in 15:21 and was followed by Christina Simone of California, who ran 1:24.

Peter Visser (Wyoming 3A champ) followed in 7th with 15:24 as well with sophomore Kole Mathison (3rd Indiana) earned 8th and also shared the time. California Lex Young finished 9th in 15:25: a time he shared with tenth place Drew Rogers (Illinois D1 champion). Riley Hough (Michigan D1 champion) captured 11th in 15:27 and Ryan Schumacher of Jesuit (Portland, Or) followed in 12th with 15:29. Oregon has not had their XC season yet but he led “Stumptown to second place behind California’s Newbury Park, which is also yet to run this fall.

Girls’ Race

The girls’ race saw no less than seven state champions toe the starting line. It was Sydney Thorvaldson, the Wyoming champion, who raced with confidence and broke away from the field to win by 40 seconds in a time of 16:38. Her time established a new course record.

Riley Stewart, the Colorado 5A champion, finished alone in second in 17:18. She’d be undefeated if not for Thorvaldson, who also beat her earlier at the heritage meet. Ava Parehk, the Illinois D1 champion, finished third in 15:36 by nipping Analee Weaver (Minnesota large School champ) at the line and sharing the time. Carmen Alder of North Carolina claimed sixth in 17:38 and Abbey Nechanicky, the Minnesota 6AA winner, followed in 7th with 17:40. Eighth went to Ava Gordon of Virginia in 17:42 and Tatum David finished a second later in 17:43.

Mia Cochran, the Pennsylvania 3A champion and like David a 2019 Foot Locker national finalist, captured 9th in 17:53 and Josephine Welin (Illinois D3 champ) came in tenth with17:55. Samantha Blair of Colorado finished 11th in 17:59 and Katrina Schlenker of Illinois rounded out the top dozen finishers in 18:02

New Jersey Non-Public Section Championship 11-15

Sarah Naticchia of Haddonfield won with 18:37 and Kevin Harvey of Seton Hall Prep ran 16:16 for 1st.

South Jersey Section Championship 11-14

The boys’ here also went down to the wire with Brady Shute of Co-op Gateway and Jackson Braddock of Southern Regional vying for honors. Shute got the nod as both shared the time of 16:03. Cole Wassell of Highland Regional captured third with 16:06.

The top two female times both came out of Group 2, which saw Haddonfield’s Sarah Naticchia and Allison Colflesh finish first and second respectively with times of 18:37 and 18:59. The meet was held in Dream Park in Logan Township.

Central Jersey Section Championship 11-14

This was held at Thompson Park in Jamesburg with Lilly Shapiro of Colts Neck winning Group 3 in 18:36. Caroline Melhorn of Montgomery scored in Group 4 with 19:01. They groupings due to fears of Covid preventing what might have been a great duel between Vidhur Polam of South Brunswick and Matt Bogdan of Colts Neck, who were the only runners under sixteen minutes. Polam won Group 4 in 15:40 and Bogdan claimed Group 4 in 15:49.

North Jersey Section 2 Championship 11-14

They ran at Oak Ridge Park in Clark, NJ with Jackson Barna of Ridge easily having the fastest time of the day with 15:17 in Group 4.

Following in second in that group with the 2nd best time of the day was Will Pinto of Ridge with 15:49. Brandon Chen of West Morris clocked 15:57 in taking honors in Group 3. Alexandra Hoffman of North Hunterdon had by far the fastest time of the girls when she won Group 4 in 18:38 with her teammate Magdalyn Hoffman taking 2nd in 19:08 and Emma Baeyens of Watchung Hills running 19:09 for third in the Group as well as for all girls.

Alabama State Meet – 11-14

The boys’ 7A race saw the top three finishers from last fall record the same places again with Walker Cole of Oak Mountain becoming a repeat winner with a time of 15:13. Stewart Brown of Auburn ran 15:23 for 2nd and Jackson Danner of Huntsville followed in 3rd with 15:46. Maxwell Hardin of Auburn earned 4th in 15:50 and Jackson Harris of Huntsville claimed 5th with 15:56.

Matthew Cobb, also from Huntsville garnered 6th with 15:57 and Mac Cowell of St. Paul Episcopal took 7th in 15:58. Sean Dorrill of Central Phenix clocked 15:59 for ninth. Miles Brush became the 6A champion by running 15:21 for Chelsea and Cooper Atkins of Scottsboro ran 15:43 to claim second after winning last fall. Woodrow Dean of Tallassee easily won 5A in 15:33.

Sangie Lincoln-Velez of Auburn earned a six-second victory over Lindsey Baxter of Baker with her mark of 18:29. Elizabeth Robertson secured the 6A girls’ title in 18:43. Emily Shumock of Faith Academy claimed the 5A honors with 19:24.

Florida State Meet 11-14

Nease runners took the top two places in 7A with Rheinhardt Harrison leading the way in 15:26.  Bradley Anderson following him into the chute 17 seconds later.

Jared Hammill of Wharton placed third in 15:51 and Seth Martinez of Lennard clocked 15:56 for 4th. Michael Toppi of Viera ran 15:57 placing 5th and Wynne Thomas just broke 18 minutes for 6th. Javier Vento of Belen Jesuit had a clear victory in 3A with 15:2. Aiden Villasuco followed his teammate with 15:41.

Jake Rogers of Leon finished 3rd with 15:46 and Mac Updike of Lake Wales earned 4th in 15:54. Runners rushed in at this point with 8 guys finishing with times between 15:55 and 15:59. Josh Stern of Satellite topped 2A with 15:31 and Matthew Mule of St. Andrew’s followed in 15:44. Gabriel Montague of Staellite was third in 15:50.

The 1A race saw a tight duel with Austin Montini of Oak Hall defeating Jackson Yarbrough of Maclay School by a second with 15:48.

Caroline Wells of Winter Springs had the fastest time of all the gals with her 17:16 cruise to the finish. And Kimbry Smith of Fort Walton Beach placed 2nd in 3A with 18:16. Alanie Rivera of Harmony was timed in 18:24 in third.

Amber Schulz of Timber Creek claimed honors in 4A with 18:26. Caroline Lehman of Cambridge Christian led 1A with 18:07 for a margin of 21 seconds and Eleanor Tymorek of St. Andrew’s was first in 2A with 18:27.

NY Section 1 Championship 11-14

Held in the Hudson Valley Sportsdome this event saw Daphne Banino of Ursuline win handily in 18:00. Brianna Carter of Peeksill finished second in 18:32. The boys’ race saw a tight struggle between John Goldberg of Carmel and John Ryan of Bronxville. Goldberg nipped his rival, as both raced 16:08.
