

Newport Summer Invite, Quiksilver International Cup and California State High School Championships highlight deep boys and girls water polo tournament talent pools

One of the most significant prep and youth water polo schedules during the year will be showcased Thursday through Sunday, with the Newport Summer Invite, Quiksilver International Cup and California State High School Championships involving both boys and girls competition and all being held in Southern California.
The schedule begins Thursday with the Newport Summer Invite, which features eight boys and eight girls teams, with the pools at El Toro, Corona del Mar and Marina being used for the tournament.
The boys field includes host Newport Harbor, along with Oaks Christian, Miramonte – competing as Orinda – and Loyola participating in one group.
Cathedral Catholic, competing as DM Padres, Corona del Mar, Sacred Heart Prep – playing as Atherton – and L.A. Premier, with athletes representing Harvard-Westlake, comprise the other group.
The boys final is scheduled for 10:20 a.m. Saturday at Corona del Mar.
The girls field also features host Newport Harbor, joined by Oaks Christian, Foothill and Seaside from San Diego in one group.
Corona del Mar, Sacred Heart Prep – competing as Atherton – along with San Diego Shores and Regency, with athletes representing Mater Dei, are scheduled to compete in the other group.
The girls championship match is scheduled for 10:20 a.m. Saturday at Marina High.
The Quiksilver International Cup includes 16-team boys divisions highlighting 12-under, 14-under, 16-under and 18-under competition, in addition to an eight-team girls 18-under field.
Chapman University, Golden West College, Long Beach City College and Saddleback College, as well as Buena Park, Edison, El Modena, Fullerton, Tustin and Yorba Linda are all host sites for the event, which begins Thursday with all the boys divisions. The boys 12-under final is Sunday at Golden West College, with the remaining boys championship matches Sunday at Long Beach City College.
The girls 18-under event starts Friday and concludes Sunday with the final at Long Beach City College.
The girls 18-under lineup includes Legacy, with athletes representing Orange Lutheran, along with Long Beach Vikings, Arroyo Grande and 680 from Danville in one group, with Foothill, San Diego Shores, Bulldog from Fresno and Diablo of Orinda in the other pool.
The boys 18-under field is expected to be one group including Imperial from Newport Beach, North Irvine Beasts, Diablo of Orinda and Fraser Valley, representing British Columbia, Canada.
Another pool includes Orange County Water Polo Club, San Diego Shores, Greenwich from Connecticut and CNAB representing Barcelona, Spain.
Mission, with athletes from JSerra, is joined in its group by Vanguard of Huntington Beach, CT Premier from Connecticut and North Irvine Team Vegas.
CC United of Lafayette, Channel Islands, Long Beach Shore and La Jolla United complete the field with its pool.
The California State High School Championships are scheduled to run Friday to Sunday at Capistrano Valley, Foothill and Garden Grove for the 23-team boys competition, along with Anaheim, Villa Park and Westminster for the 22-team girls tournament.
Arroyo Grande, which prevailed last year against San Marcos in a shootout in the final, is the returning girls champion.
Long Beach Wilson defeated Mountain View St. Francis in the boys championship match last summer, but neither program is returning this year, although both schools are entered in the girls event.
Foothill finished third in the boys event last year and is the top returning entry.
The boys championship is scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday at Foothill.
The girls final is expected to be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Westminster.
Aliso Niguel, Arroyo Grande, Bellarmine Prep, Campolindo, Capistrano Valley, Clovis, Clovis North, Clovis West, El Dorado, Foothill, Laguna Beach, Leland, Los Alamitos, Menlo School, Murrieta Valley, Redlands East Valley, Royal, San Clemente, San Marcos, Santa Barbara, Soquel, Stevenson and Villa Park are scheduled to compete in the boys event.
Arroyo Grande, Buchanan, Clovis, Clovis East, Clovis North, Clovis West, Las Lomas, Leland, Long Beach Millikan, Long Beach Wilson, Los Alamitos, Marlborough, Menlo School, Miramonte, Murrieta Valley, Orange Lutheran, San Clemente, San Marcos, San Ramon Valley, Santa Barbara, Stevenson and Mountain View St. Francis are all expected to participate in the girls tournament.
