While We Prepare Our NorCal Postseason Honors Release, We’re Asking Readers To Take Part In Our Boys Basketball Fan Vote For The Region’s Top Player •
SportStars will be releasing its NorCal Player of the Year and All-NorCal teams in our upcoming April 10 issue. While we’ll be producing our own NorCal Player of the Year, we want to find out the People’s Player of the Year. So welcome to the 2019-20 boys basketball fan vote.
UPDATE: Voting CLOSED at Noon, April 9.
Readers can vote for one player every six hours. While the winner may not be OUR final choice, we’ll be sure to uniquely highlight the player with the most votes. You can also vote for Girls Player of the Year.
Here are the now 11 nominees. Listed alphabetically.
Marcus Bagley, Sheldon-Sacramento, Sr. — Our NorCal Player of the Year selection from a season ago. Injuries kept the Arizona State signee to just 17 games, but he still averaged 22 points and 8.8 rebounds for the NorCal Open Division regional finalists. In his final game, he scored 27 to lead the Huskies’ comeback win over Dublin.
Robby Beasley, Dougherty Valley-San Ramon, Sr. — The versatile Montana-bound guard averaged 23.3 points, 7.6 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.6 steals over 20 games. The Wildcats were 22-2 and ranked No. 4 in NorCal before Beasley suffered a season-ending torn meniscus. DV finished the season 0-5 without him.

Je’Lani Clark, Riordan-S.F., Sr. — Clark was named the Co-MVP of the West Catholic Athletic League after leading the Crusaders to a share of the regular season title. The Nevada-bound wing was a stat monster, averaging 15.8 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 1.7 steals.
NEW! Quinn Denker, Bellarmine-San Jose, Sr. — Denker is now the second player to work his way into the click-vote portion of this vote. We received more than 300 votes by email since Sunday evening. Named the Central Coast Section Player of the Year by 49ers Cal-Hi Sports Bay Area, Denker averaged 16.6 points, 6.4 assists and 3.6 rebounds.
Aidan Mahaney, Campolindo-Moraga, So. — Considered one of the nation’s top 2022 recruits, Mahaney was the top player on a Cougars team which reached the state final for a second straight year. He averaged 19.4 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.4 assists and slightly more than one steal a game.
Mike Mitchell, Archbishop Mitty-San Jose, Jr. — One of the best all-around players in the WCAL, the Pepperdine commit shared the league’s Co-MVP honors with Clark. Mitchell averaged 13.6 points, 6.2 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1.8 steals a contest.
Bryce Monroe, Riordan-S.F., Sr. — Truly added by popular demand, SportStars’ February cover kid is being added to the poll after more than 100 write-in votes were emailed in. He’s certainly deserving however. The Sam Houston State-bound PG led the Crusaders in both points (20.2 per game) and assists (3.2). He also added 3.2 rebounds per game.
Marsalis Roberson, Bishop O’Dowd-Oakland, Jr. — The shifty, sharp-shooting guard was recently named Bay Area News Groups’ Bay Area Player of the Year. He led the NCS Open Champions and NorCal Open finalists with 16.5 points and 6.3 rebounds per game.
Anthony Roy, Dublin, Sr. — Roy stepped front and center into the alpha role vacated when Beasley transferred out of Dublin in the summer of 2019. The 6-foot-5 forward nearly doubled his scoring average from his junior season and led Gaels to within a point of the NorCal Open final. He averaged 17.8 points, 5.4 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals.
Isa Silva, Jesuit-Carmichael, Jr. — Silva will be the Sacramento area’s most coveted recruit this summer and into his final season with the Marauders. He averaged 18.5 points, 4.2 rebounds and 4.5 assists as a junior.
Corey Yerger, Grant-Sacramento, Jr. — The 6-foot-1 guard went from being just a scorer as a sophomore, to an all-around standout as a junior. Yerger led the Pacers in points (20/game), assists (4) and steals (2.2). He also averaged 5 rebounds a contest.
WRITE-IN VOTES: Teiano Hardee (Vallejo) — 12, Quinn Denker (Bellarmine-San Jose) — 304 (prior to being added), Gavin Wilburn (Weston Ranch-Stockton) — 20
SO, WHO YOU GOT?

Unfortunately, Cole wasn’t considered for this honor because we don’t include the Central Section when defining “NorCal”

April 4, 2020 #40 AuthorI think Anthony Roy deserves to be not only the fans Norcal player of the year but your choice of player of the year too … Nobody has had a year like him.. He’s been overlooked all his high school career including AAU.. He led his team to maybe the best year at Dublin high school… His team beat Dougherty Valley twice one game by 40 points Also beat Riordan and Campolindo once respectively! Anthony team lost to a Sheldon team thats loaded with D1 prospects by one point.. If you were at the game they gave that game away they had Sheldon beat..lol He was named league (EBAL) MVP also he was FIRST TEAM All Metro, All Eastbay and All EBAL..l He was named MVP of the Gridley tournament (Riordan Campolindo Capital Christian and Salesian) At the Norcal showcase he was named player of the game they played a good Western Ranch team that made it to the state championship game … At the Damien classic in LA he was name all tournament and at the De la Salle Martin Luther King classic It was named player of the game.. At beginning of the season he had no offers Now he has Cal State Fullerton ,USF , Montana state and Cal State East Bay …He has my vote for NorCal player of the year and should be yours (Sports Stars) too..
Eugene
April 4, 2020 #41 AuthorThere is something kind of fishy about how this Campolindo vote is growing

April 5, 2020 #42 AuthorHey Sports Magazine/ Bryson! You should find a way to re calculate the votes starting from this morning which is when the discrepancy happened; Robbie, Aidan and Anthony have all been working hard to encourage there family and friends to vote over the last few days. Now you have a new kid who jumps over everyone with 10,000+ votes in a matter of hours. this new kid-Bryce- needs to be removed and the voting continue! Also, I agree with whomever said Gavin- He definitely needs to be added. ok just my two cents! I hope yall fix this.
Chuck Hayes
April 5, 2020 #43 AuthorWeston Ranch came from nothing and now is one of the top highschools in Cali. Surprising that he only gets third team but I forgot it’s alll about hype.
Chuck Hayes
April 5, 2020 #44 AuthorGavin Wilburn brought a team from nothing to one of the top schools in norcal. 3 assist short from averaging a triple double his jr year. Sr year had ups and downs with good numbers and clutching games. But y’all just go off hype y’all don’t actually see for yourself. Just a kid from Oakland with a tough life moved to a city no one thought about and changed it. That’s a MVP in a pro eyes.
Christian Ordonez
April 5, 2020 #45 AuthorWho got doubled teamed, trapped, and denied more than Gavin. NorCal Prep and prep hoops need to give more credit to this kid. And stop sucking kids based off hype because at the end of the day y’all still not getting none of the hype they giving y’all. No clout. Can we get sum fairness????????♂️????

April 5, 2020 #47 Authorit is unreal that Bryce votes go up from 4700 votes at 8:52 am and is now at 10,362 votes at 9:31 am. How is this possible if we can only vote every six hours. THIS IS IMPOSSIBLE? Someone needs to look into to this.
GWENDOLYN JACKSON
April 5, 2020 #48 AuthorTHIS IS A JOKE!!!!!! IT’S NOOO WAY BRYCE GOT THOUSANDS IN LESS THAN A HOUR! This is FIXED!! It was already not fair that Bryce was added 2 days after voting had already started!!! Come on SPORTS STAR MAGAZINE! This should be looked into.????

April 5, 2020 #49 AuthorHello/ is this rigged or fix voting? How is it that Bryce Monroe -who was added late and after people complained votes jump from 2740 now has over 10,000 within 3hours? how do you get that many votes -If this is fixed then why did you all have this type of voting. I’m questioning the integrity of your voting system and the fairness of the players. If this young man truly knows 11,000 people then ok but you can only vote every six hours-right -so 10,000 every six hours not 1000 per 30-45 seconds -this is cheating. My nephew, Anthony, Supt of his school district, encouraged the whole school district to vote for Anthony so I can see why his numbers have increased. How did Bryce numbers jump- this destroys in the integrity of your magazine and this is cheating and you all should be ashamed of yourselves! I expect an email explanation of this type of voting system-
Lindsay Beck
April 5, 2020 #50 AuthorSportsStar , lets be real here.
The addition of Bryce Monroe at the last minute is truly unfair to the players that were already added and the fans that are now voting. I am voting everyday and realized that Bryce Monroe was at 0% and the next day increased by 10k votes. If he wasn’t apart of the vote originally then there was a true reason he was left out of the vote in the first place. The original players in the vote were selected and truly deserved to be up there for the fans to vote considering their progress over the season. I WOULD look into this as this is for the fans voting. But whether they win or not we know who the REAL, TRUE winner is and it surely isn’t him.
Chace Bryson
April 5, 2020 #51 AuthorWe added Bryce after he received more than 100 write-in votes. We’re not sure how his total is growing this quickly. We agree it’s a bit fishy and are looking into it.

April 5, 2020 #52 AuthorAnthony Roy is the REAL MVP of the season leading Dublin as far as they did.

April 5, 2020 #53 AuthorHello SportsMagazine -how did Bryce Monroe go from 2740 votes as of 0500am and then jump to over 10,000 by 0945. Is this a scam or some type of glitch -this is an illegal voting system and how unfair is this to the original players you selected. You all should be embarrassed to allow someone to destroy the integrity of your magazine/ “brand”.

April 5, 2020 #58 AuthorFunny how people hating on my son. Too bad he was the radio station 95.7 the game and a lot of people are voting for him…go check his stats. I coached Anthony Roy …all these kids listed deserve recognition. We dont put a person down to make us look good. Anthony Roy got 15,000 votes.
Maybe it’s a glitch all the way around?
Eugene
April 5, 2020 #59 AuthorAnthony Roy does have 15K votes, but they have been growing since the start. They didn’t materialize in a couple hours. That said, a radio appearance could make a big impact.
Renard Monroe
April 5, 2020 #60 AuthorBryce was on 95.7 the game. 45 minute interview. Check it out. Not sure of how all this works but I see the hate through the screen.
Sports Enthusiast
April 5, 2020 #61 AuthorIf we are going to question votes, let’s definitely question them all! I say the 15.000 votes and even the 11,000 votes are crazy as well, especially when there are kids with only 600! Why are you worried about Bryce Monroe anyway? He is not the only one! You didn’t question anyone else! He was added based on the pre requisites outlined on the page! The kid has over 11,000 followers on Instagram alone so it is absolutely plausible! As his people didn’t know they had the opportunity to vote for him until his picture was added why wouldn’t they rally around him! The vote is viral now and his people are pushing him like all the other players have done! Sounds like there are adults who have a problem with a kid because they are pushing their own agenda! Shame on you as that kid has done NOTHING to any of you!
Chace Bryson
April 5, 2020 #62 AuthorNo one is against Bryce here. He absolutely has a serious support network — it’s the only reason we added him after our email inbox was flooded over the first 36 hours of the vote. However, once people began showing concern we tested some things on our own. We were able to repeat vote ourselves, which means numbers for EVERY PLAYER can be questioned. We think we fixed the issue, but we will likely need to clear the board and have a new vote. It’s not ideal, but it’s probably the only way it can be addressed fairly.
Eugene
April 5, 2020 #63 AuthorWHAT? There are communities that have been working the a** off for days to get votes for their player and you want to delete them? Not cool
Chace Bryson
April 5, 2020 #64 AuthorLike I said, it’s not ideal. But if we were able to repeat vote, any player could’ve benefitted whether there was ill-intent or not.
Renard Monroe
April 5, 2020 #65 AuthorThat is what happens when things are questioned. I feel for the kids as it is us adults who make it bad. If followings/voting are true. Those voters will come back to vote. Hopefully kids like Gavin Wilburn, Josh Williams, Quinn Denker get added. Again, all kids listed above deserve recognition. No need to hate on another to make yourself look good.
Eugene
April 5, 2020 #66 AuthorI can tell you that on player with over 10K votes has tons of social support. The local little league has posted about it. The local soccer league has posted about it. Schools have posted about it. The school district has posted about it. Community groups have posted about it. It’s on instagram, facebook, twitter. It was in a school district newsletter. They are working hard to get every vote. But those votes have been growing over time. It’s not like 10K votes just showed up in an hour.

April 5, 2020 #68 AuthorSo I try to stay off of this because there are adults without tact and filters that find it appropriate to lash out at children! I personally don’t subscribe to that type of behavior however enough is enough! To Ms. Becker and anyone else who would question the talent of my son or any other player that was not included here, shame on you! There are talented young men and women who accomplished amazing things this season besides my son Bryce Monroe that were not included, Quin Denker, and Teiano Hardee immediately come to mind. You have all made it obvious you are Team Anthony and that’s fine because I know and love that kid too! If he wins, he wins and that’s awesome! But again, don’t put my son down or speak on him as his body of work on and off the court have and continue to speak volumes. He was blessed to earn a Division 1 scholarship and will continue to play long after this vote is over. Crazy part is HE didn’t even ask to be added or participate in all of this, however HE is who you are lashing out at!
Gisette Denker
April 6, 2020 #69 AuthorBryce is a great player and deserving to be included. Thank you for your comments about Quinn. The acknowledgment is much appreciated. All these boys are amazing. I’m thankful for the platform to celebrate their achievements this year. Good luck to all!

April 5, 2020 #70 AuthorWow! So much negativity, name calling and fighting over votes. My bro, Anthony, Superintendent of the whole entire Dublin Unified school district encouraged everyone to vote for him and to do it every 6hours. We talking about 15K votes for over 4days not 10,000 within hours- Hours in which the average are sleeping but hey- who am I to judge. oh and just FYI, Anthony’s voting was also posted on someone’s page that has 496K follower’s. #thatsfact #STATS -496K followers and gets over 53K likes on each post! Professional player! How many likes are you averaging for each post … let me leave that alone! Put up the Stats!
Chace Bryson
April 5, 2020 #71 AuthorWhich is all well and good. Anthony clearly has a great support system, and even if every person who voted was well intentioned, he likely benefitted from an ability for some to repeat vote. If we start over, that support system should still be there.
Sports Enthusiast
April 5, 2020 #72 AuthorBryson, I am not speaking to the magazine. I am speaking to the people who are commenting. To blame the glitch on a kid is not appropriate in my opinion. You must exercise due diligence and protect the integrity of your brand. We support that position 100%
Chace Bryson
April 5, 2020 #73 AuthorThank you, Nyree.

April 5, 2020 #74 AuthorAny adult who truly sits here and thinks Bryce and his “people” are rigging the system or trying to cheat please grow up . This is not the Heisman trophy winner nor will it ever be that serious to win . This is high school basketball , and you supposed adults, because that’s not really how most of you are acting right now should really be ashamed . Who really is going to sit up here and rig a high school voting system , guarantee the majority of people saying these things never watched Bryce play . And if you did you probably were on the losing side of things and felt some type of way . Don’t speak on the integrity of his circle over a high school popularity contest please and thank you . *Drops mic
Chace Bryson
April 5, 2020 #75 AuthorThanks, Brandon. These votes are meant to be a fun way for fans to show support for a player. With everyone stuck at home right now, there’s some competitive fire from people that seems to be looking for an outlet. We get it. I’ll say the same thing I said to one of Anthony Roy’s supporters. The support for both players is legit, but a loophole still existed. So the easiest thing to do is give those support systems a chance to prove their support again once the loophole is fixed.
Eugene
April 5, 2020 #76 AuthorIf you feel there was questionable voting on all sides, I’d love to see a chart that shows each player’s votes and how they grew over time. That would be telling information. I’m sure you can export voting data for players by hour or day. I’d hate to see you erase the hard work that some have put into securing these votes. And then force them to go back and start over.
And also, I feel for you. I was once involved with an online voting contest that turned out like this. In that case, we canceled and rebuilt the system so the problem didn’t happen the following year. That wasn’t a popular solution either.

April 6, 2020 #90 AuthorI’m reading all these comments from the parents but not one from any student-not good. I just noticed three players on here -no longer have the link in their Bio; no talks on SNAP, IG or Twitter. The decision to add, remove or change should have been in the Best Interest of the players. They’re back to playing Fortnite and Madden ..lol Their entire senior year disrupted and dramatically changed due to COVID-19! Look at the sacrifices and mental anguish they are enduring. -Let’s be supportive, encouraging and prayerful for all of these seniors! Best wishes to the Class of 2020! All of them are NORCAL’s Player of the Year!
Chace Bryson
April 6, 2020 #91 AuthorThe new player was added after receiving more than 100 write-in votes. His support was fervent from the beginning. We added him to the click voting to spare our email servers. I feel it important to point out that the player added late was not the only player whose votes were being questioned. We received emails about massive gains for others as well. Once we saw repeat voting was possible, we thought it best to start over. The mass of player support from the first set of votes will also be mentioned in our Fan Vote result write-up. Currently, we have another player getting heavy write-in vote and it’s possible he’ll be added by the end of the day as well.

Here’s a real candidate hands down.
GAVIN WILBURN
The kid that made EVERY coach take his team back to the drawing board
The kid, who for his 10-11 years on gym floors always found a way, with & through his teamates, to pull out a W
& if you’ve seen him play, you’ll understand me when I describe him as:
The kid that every ref dogged because they loved his “go off” show
& most important:
Probably the most coachable kid leaving high school
Yeah, I VOTE FOR THE BEAST

April 8, 2020 #106 AuthorWe hear ya, Damon. These Fan Fave votes are for the kids and as far as for the readers, something that’s envisioned to be fun! Competition makes sense. Passion and “Oorah for our guy!” We get that. As far as some of the gripes and oddly enough, concerns about unfair play. It’s not so much about a glitch in the voting widget and has nothing whatsoever to do with “fixing”, it’s more likely that SportStars content (all of it) is syndicated via MaxPreps and SFGate Prep Sports… and the high schools, some of which are really good at sharing these (fun) things to their community to rally votes for their own student-athletes… all of that might account for the great amount of activity we’ve experienced. Bottom line, lets keep it fun and remember, this is for the kids enjoyment. Thanks for all the interest, engagement, opinions…

April 8, 2020 #108 AuthorThere are tons of people who are trying to vote for Anthony Roy and they are not able to. What’s going on with your system?

April 8, 2020 #109 AuthorWe don’t understand why the vote resets for some after six hours and doesn’t for others. We’re asking the makers of the third party software why this is. We know that some have found success by clearing browser histories, or re-setting their modems. Obviously we don’t want people to have to reset their modem every six hours. We apologize for this. If we can find a better answer for you from the makers of the software, we will post it.

April 9, 2020 #110 AuthorSo your not able to fix the problem, but you had no problem with changing the first set of votes he had because there was an obvious glitch in the system. ???? Very confusing!

April 9, 2020 #112 AuthorSorry if you all really think this is rigged. We checked with our voting widget provider and we simply exceeded our voting plan limits. It’s been an active vote! We’re upping our limits now. Please… this is for the kids. Keep that in mind if you would. Thanks!
